Elmira Pioneers News Release
It was an exciting night here at Historic Dunn Field. The atmosphere was electric, the competition was fierce and the fireworks after the game were beautiful.
The Pioneers opted got it started with some small ball action as a bunt by Troy Dixon (Samford) and sacrifice bunt by Rob Perteet (Samford) put Perteet into scoring position. Tyler Plantier would single to RailRider Chris Lehane (Jacksonville U.) who would throw the ball away to allow Dixon to score.
Plantier would again be the focal point of the offense as he drove a deep triple to center, over the head of centerfielder Dale Whickham (Cornell) to score in Ty Denzer (Kansas).
The RailRiders would answer in the fourth with a four four run rally sparked by Whickham's signature double down the left field line. However, The Pioneers would load the bases in the same inning and score in a run when Dixon was hit by a pitch to bring the score to 4-3 in favor of Victor.
The Pioneers would tie it up at four in the bottom of the fifth off of Phil Madonna's (Siena) would hit a bloop single to the right side of the field to bring in Joe Preziuso (Canisius) who led off with a walk.
The top of the order would rally back in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Troy Dixon bunted right in front of catcher Mike Myers (RIT). With his speed, he reached first on the bunt. Perteet followed up with a nice single to the left side to put Pio's at the corners. Brian Reed's (RIT) night would be done after that sequence. The RailRiders gave the ball to Dan Cunico (UMass Lowell) to try and finish the ining. However a wild pitch by Cunico brought in Dixon to get the lead and a Tyler Plantier (UC San Diego) single would bring in Perteet to bring the score to 6-4.
The RailRiders tried to rally in the ninth with a run scored but Elmira would get the win at home. Kyle Stuart (Samford) gets the win for Elmira pitching two innings allowing one hit and walking one batter. Cody Thompson (Randolph-Macon) earns the save allowing one unearned run and striking out three batters. Brian Reed gets the loss for Victor pitching five and two-thirds innings giving up eight hits, six runs and walking three.
The Pioneers will play against the Geneva Red Wings at home on Sunday, June 19th at 5:05 p.m. The Pioneers are celebrating Father's Day sponsored by His Tabernacle. Following the ball game dads and their kids will play catch onto the field.
