Elks Win Rubber Match with Knights by a Score of 10-4

In what was an ugly game at Vince Genna Stadium Sunday that included a 22 minute rain delay and 9 combined errors between the two teams, the Bend Elks managed to score 10 runs on 12 hits en route to a 10-4 victory to take 2 of 3 from the Corvallis Knights.

The Elks got on the board first in the bottom of the first as Derek Blankenship reached on an error, Shawn O'Brien walked, Bo Walter hit an RBI single, then Tyler Christian grounded into an RBI Fielder's Choice to make it 2-0. The Knights made it 2-1 in the top of the 3rd as Connor Hoffman led off the inning by reaching on an Elks error, a single by Corey Moore, a dropped pop up by the Elks pitcher Chavez, then Hoffman came around to score on an RBI single by Grant Fink.

The Elks would add another run in the bottom of the third as Shawn O'Brien had a one out single, Bo Walter reached on an error, Tyler Christian singled, then Jacob Goulder hit a Sac Fly to score O'Brien and make the game 3-1.

Corvallis would respond with a run in the top of the 4th as Matt Nylen would lead off the inning with a hit by pitch, steal second, advanced to third on a single by Dane Lund, then scored on a groundball by Nate Roberts to close the gap 3-2.

The Elks would then score 2 in the bottom of the 5th to expand the lead 5-2. The Elks led off with two runners after Bo Walter walked and Tyler Christian was hit by a pitch, Kyle Buchanan hit an infield single to load the bases, then a throwing error by Knights 3rd baseman Griffin Boyd would let both Walter and Christian score.

The Elks would tack on another run in the 7th as Kyle Buchanan would get hit by a pitch with one out, Nick Wagner singled to right, then Cullen Hendrickson hit into a fielder's choice to Knights 1st baseman Grant Fink, who after getting the out at 2nd, could not handle the wild throw from shortstop Nate Roberts, allowing Buchanan to score.

The Elks then added 4 more runs in the 8th as Derek Blankenship led off the inning with a single, O'Brien was hit by a pitch, Bo Walter hit a single into center that led to Knights center fielder Matt Hoffman throwing out Blankenship at the plate, Tyler Christian walked to load the bases, and Jacob Goulder hit a 2 run double to extend the score to 8-2, then Cameron Newell hit a 2 run single to extend the lead 10-2.

The Knights managed to close the gap in the top of the 9th as Connor Hoffman reached on an error, Corey Moore hit a single into left, then Griffin Boyd delivered a 2 run triple to end the scoring at 10-4.

The winning pitcher on the night for the Elks was Daniel Chavez from the College of San Mateo. Chavez went 5 innings, giving up 2 runs, 1 earned, on 4 hits while striking out 4. Alex Bailey was excellent in relief, going 3 innings, giving up just 1 hit and striking out 3. Daniel Grazzini threw the 9th for the Elks, who improve to 3-3 on the season.

At the plate for the Elks, Bo Walter capped off an impressive series going 3-4 with an RBI and 2 runs tonight and is now leading the West Coast League with a .521 batting average. Jacob Goulder went 1-4 with a run and 3 RBI and Kyle Buchanan also went 3-4.

The Elks will take Monday off, then return to action for the first $2 dollar Tuesday on June 14th as they welcome the Bellingham Bells into town, first pith scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
