Cowlitz Black Bears News Release

Longview-Kelso, June 12, 2011: *In their league home opening series against the Walla Walla Sweets, the Cowlitz Black Bears knocked eight hits and drew eight walks to win comfortably 8-1.

Porter Clayton (University of Oregon) started for the Black Bears, delivering five innings of shutout baseball. He left the game with a 5-0 lead courtesy of his teammates, whose patient approach again paid dividends. Derek Atkinson (Clackamas CC) provided the largest offensive spark with a RBI triple in the 4th inning. Spencer O'Neil (University of Oregon) batted cleanup for the first time this season and collected a pair of singles, while Braxton Miller went 0-for-2 but reached base with three walks.

The win puts the team at the midway point of a six-game homestand to open league play. The team will square off against the Wenatchee AppleSox tomorrow, June 13th through Wednesday, June 15th. Wenatchee looks to defend last year's title and has started hot again this year, holding a 6-1 record before play today.

With the series win, the Black Bears improve to 2-4 in league play, while the Sweets fall to 3-3.

Tomorrow's game starts at 6:35, and it will be Kids Eat Free night. All kids 14 and under will receive a voucher for a free hot dog, soda, and bag of chips, and all kids can run the bases after the game.
