Elks Split DH with Northwest Honkers

The Bend Elks took to the field in non-league action Tuesday night, but the Northwest Honkers proved to be no small order. After defeating the Split Squad in the afternoon game 4-3, the Honkers took the Elks to 11 innings before Bend came through with four runs in the bottom of the 11th, and beat the Honkers by as core of 8-7.
The Honkers jumped out to a lead as they scored two runs in the top of the first courtesy of three hits in the inning, the last an RBI double. The Elks came back and scored one in the first and two in the third to take a 3-2 lead, but the Honkers would regain the lead in the top of the fourth due to control issues with Daniel Grazzini, who walked two hitters in the inning and was charged with a pair of wild pitches as well.
The Elks would tie the game back up in the bottom of the eighth inning as a pair of walks and a wild pitch would prove to be costly for the Honkers, who surrendered 9 walks and hit 6 Elks hitters on the night as they struggled to find the strike zone throughout the night, and the Elks sent it to extras.
The Elks blew a huge opportunity in the bottom of the tenth as the Elks got the bases loaded with no outs, and could not put a run across. Jordan Brower lined out to Right Field, Nick Wagner popped out, then on a questionable play, the Elks had both runners running on an apparent suicide squeeze attempt, and were tagged out at the plate to end the threat.
The Honkers loaded the bases in the top of the 11th, but looked as though they wouldn ¬â¢t capitalize just as the Elks failed to the inning before. But with two outs, the Honkers scored on a passed ball, then scored two more on a single and an error, giving the Honkers a 7-4 lead.
However, the Elks would overcome their 3 run defecit in the bottom of the 11th, scoring 4 runs, including a walk off double by Donald Collins, and the Elks would take the contest 8-7, sending what was left of the over 2,700 Elks fans home happy.
The Elks will head to Walla Walla in the morning to begin a three game series with the Sweets, first pitch scheduled for 7:05.
*Three of the 4 Bend Elks that were selected to the West Coast League All-Star Game got to see the field on Tuesday night, as Royce Bollinger went 3-4 and scored a run, Michael Benjamin went 0-1, was hit by a pitch and stole a base, and Stephen Ostapeck took the loss for the West Coast All Stars after pitching an inning, giving up two runs on one hit, issuing a walk and striking out one. Daniel Chavez was also selected but did not play in the game.
