Elks Solid Behind Quality Pitching, Defeat Kelowna Falcons 2-1

June 20, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release

For the second consecutive night, the Bend Elks got timely hitting and quality pitching in order to secure a victory, this time over Kelowna, defeating the Falcons by a score of 2-1.

The Falcons got on the board first in the bottom of the 4th after Connor Joe drew a one out walk, got to second on a ground out, then scored on an RBI single from Andrew Firth to make the score 1-0.

The Elks tied the game in the top of the 7th due in large part to 2 walks issued by Kelowna starter David Otterman to lead off the inning. That put Tyler Christian in scoring position for Riley Tompkins, who delivered an RBI single. That would end Otterman's night, and reliever Jared Mortenson would leave the bases loaded, getting Collins to ground out to end the inning. The Elks would then take the lead in the top of the 8th as Royce Bollinger singled and made his way to third on an error by the pitcher, putting him in a position to score on a Shawn O'Brien RBI single.

That would prove to be enough as the pitching controlled most of this game, as has been the case for most of the Elks young season, as 10 of the 13 games the Elks have played so far have been decided by 2 runs or fewer. Kurt Jahnke provided a quality but would receive a no decision, going 6 innings, giving up 1 run on 4 hits, striking out 2. Taylor Chris and Stephen Ostapeck threw scoreless 7th, 8th, and 9th innings, Chris getting the win and Ostapeck getting the save.

The Elks will continue the series with Kelowna tomorrow, first pitch scheduled for 6:35. Also, the Elks Split Squad will be home tomorrow and Wednesday for $2 dollar Tuesday and Free Kids Wednesday against the Thurston County Senators.
