June 20, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release
Daniel Chavez and Alex Bailey pitched a combined 3 hitter on Sunday, and using enough offense to help avoid sweep at the hands of Kitsap, beating the Blue Jackets by a score of 3-1. Chavez and Bailey combined throwing 7 strikeouts without a walk, combined with good defense and timely hitting from Royce Bollinger, who would deliver the game winning hit in the 8th inning for the Elks.
The Elks got on the board first in the top half of the 2nd after Shawn O'Brien singled to lead off the inning and would come around to score after a double by Loren Gardner-Young to make it 1-0. Kitsap would tie the game in the bottom of the 5th as Kitsap's Brennan Fulkerson led off the inning with a double, then an error by Gardner-Young would allow Fulkerson to tie the game at 1.
That proved to be Kitsap's only run on the night as Chavez and Bailey were terrific all night. Chavez would get the win, going 7 innings, giving up the 3 hits and one run while striking out 5. Bailey would go the final 2 innings in getting the save. The game would stay at 1 until the 8th inning, when Royce Bollinger would hit an RBI single to score Michael Tevlin, who had entered as a pinch runner for Bo Walter, making the game 2-1. The Elks would add an insurance run in the top of the 9th as Justin Maffei would score on a wild pitch, resulting in the 3-1 final.
The Elks, who evened their season record at 6-6, will head north to face the Kelowna Falcons for a 3 game series starting tomorrow, 6:35 first pitch.
