Bend Elks News Release

The Bend Elks had their opportunities on Friday night to open their season with a victory, but could not capitalize on 12 walks allowed by the Klamath Gems and dropped Game 1 of the 3 game series by a score of 5-2.

The Elks stranded two runners on in the first inning, loaded the bases in the second inning before being retired on three consecutive strikeouts, and also left the bases loaded in the sixth inning to let winning pitcher Patrick ORourke off the hook despite his seven walks allowed in his 3 and 2/3 innings of relief work. Matt Klein from Oklahoma State started the game for the Gems and went 4 innings, giving up 1 run on 4 hits while walking four and striking out three. Josh Ferrell threw the final inning and 1/3 for the Gems to record the save.

Nick Stiltner was the losing pitcher for the Elks on the night, giving up four runs, two earned, in four innings of work. Nate King relieved him for the next 3 and 2/3 innings before Brady Kirkpatrick got the final groundball out for the Elks defensively in the bottom of the 8th.

At the plate, the Elks managed only 5 hits on the night, as poor control was the theme of the night for both sides. Derek Blankenship was the only Elk with a multiple hit night, getting two hits and two walks on the night. Justin Maffei had a hit and an RBI Sac Fly in the top half of the 4th. Kyle Mauch and Grant Moscolo had the other two hits for the Elks.

The Elks will return to action tomorrow as Jason Wilson (0-0) will take the mound for the Elks in Klamath, first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
