The Bend Elks gave up 4 runs in the top of the second and faltered down the stretch, losing the rubber match of the three game series to the Corvallis Knights 7-2 on Monday night.

Chris Johnson (5-0) picked up the win for the Corvallis Knights as he threw 5 innings, giving up 4 hits and striking out 4 during that same time period. He and the rest of the Knights (32-16) pitching staff were in control most of the night, limiting the Elks to just 8 hits, and Scott Schultz threw a scoreless ninth, striking out the side to help the Knights secure the victory.

The Knights did most of their damage in the second inning, as small ball and crucial errors would prove to be costly for the Elks (27-21). A leadoff walk to Ryan Gorton, who would advance to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball, were followed by an RBI single from Corey Davis and a double from Kramer Scott. That was followed by Cade Gotta, who hit a routine groundball to shortstop that was missed by Michael Benjamin, allowing another run to score and make it 2-0. Connor Hoffman followed with an RBi single and Trent Oleszczuk dropped down a one out sac bunt to give the Knights a 4-0 lead. The Knights added two more in the top of the 6th due to two hit batters, and another Elks error, this one by left fielder Jordan Brower, giving the Knights a 6-0 lead.

The Elks managed to get one back in each the sixth and seventh to cut the lead to 7-2. Stetson Olson hit a one out RBI double to plate Justin Maffei in the 6th and Nick Wagner hit an RBI double in the 7th to plate Cullen Hendrickson to account for the two runs. Corvallis added one in the top of the 9th as Corey Moore had an RBI groundout to give the final 7-2 score.

With the loss, the Elks now hold a one game edge over the Cowlitz Black Bears for the second and final spot in the West Coast League West division playoffs with 6 games to play for each team. The Elks will begin a three game series Tuesday with the Walla Walla Sweets, first pitch at 6:35 p.m.
