Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
LONGVIEW-KELSO: Monday August 1, 2011: Corvallis catcher Ryan Gorton of Oregon State went 11-for-24 and collected 11 RBIs for the WCL West first-place Knights to earn co-Player of the Week honors with Kevin Bosson (pictured) of Cowlitz.
Black Bears right-hander Kevin Bosson of Cal Poly Pomona twirled a complete game five-hit shutout vs. Bellingham as Cowlitz blanked the Bells 9-0 on Friday, July 29.
The Black Bears (25-22) and Knights (31-16) are both fighting for playoff berths in the West as Corvallis is currently 4 games up on Bend (27-20) and 6 on Cowlitz. The first two finishers advance to the Divisional Series. Wenatchee (34-10) has wrapped up the East Division. Bellingham (20-24) and Walla Walla (19-25) are battling for the final spot in the East.
Gorton is hitting .325 with 4 doubles and 16 RBIs for the Knights. The senior-to-be from Tigard, Oregon has made starts at catcher, in the outfield, at first base and as the Corvallis designated hitter. He is excelling this summer defensively as a catcher.
Ryan played for the 2009 WCL champion Wenatchee AppleSox and starred as a pitcher. For OSU this past spring, Gorton made 8 relief appearances and caught some, including one start, after Beavers' starting catcher Andrew Susac went down with an injury.
Bosson, a redshirt sophomore, is 3-2 with a 3.44 ERA over 7 starts for Cowlitz, his second season with the Black Bears. This past spring, Kevin went 10-5 with a 3.83 ERA for the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos.
