Elks fall to Bellingham 5-2
July 8, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release
The Elks made the trip up to Bellingham to begin their 3 game series against the Bells on Friday and were unable to beat the red hot Bells, who had won their previous 8 games before losing to Walla Walla on Thursday.
Eric Lane would provide much of the offense on the day for the Bells, including a critical two run single with one out in the bottom of the 8th to break the 2 all tie. The game was well pitched early on as the first hit of the game for either side wasn't recorded until the bottom of the 3rd. The Elks got their 1st run in the top of the 4th as Bo Walter reached on error and scored on a Tyler Christian double. Bellingham got it back in the bottom half of the inning as back to back doubles from Ben Grubb and Pat Gallagher allowed Grubb to score to tie it at 1. The Elks took the lead 2-1 in the top of the 6th as Bo Walter would once again reach on an error and eventually come around to score on a Ryan Dunn single.
The Bells got going in the bottom of the 7th as Lane and Derek Atkinson led off the inning with a single and walk respectively.
After being sacrificed over to 2nd and 3rd, a popup into shallow center looked like the Bells would strand the runners, but a groundball hit to Tyler Christian went between his legs, allowing the Bells to tie the game. Then in the bottom of the 8th, the Bells added 3 more, 2 coming on a 1 out double from Eric Lane, and that would be enough for the Bells the rest of the way.
Game 2 will take place tomorrow at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham.
