Bend Elks News Release
In an incredible game that didn't have a run scored until the 13th inning, the Elks scraped across two runs in the top of the 13th and held on for the win Sunday night, beating the Bellingham Bells by a score of 2-1 at Joe Martin Field.
Pitching dominated the first 12 innings of play, as the two teams combined for only 9 hits in the first 12 innings of the ball game. Daniel Chavez started and threw 9 shutout innings for Bend, giving up 5 hits and striking out two in receiving the no decision. The Bells used 3 pitchers to combine for 12 shutout innings, as those pitchers gave up just 4 hits and struck out 5 in that same time frame.
Then in the 12th, Michael Tevlin led off the inning with a double off Bells reliever Brandon Boyle. Derek Blankenship sacrificed him over to third, then Justin Maffei delivered a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Tevlin to score the first run. Then with two outs, Donald Collins singled, stole 2nd, and scored what proved to be the winning run on an RBI single.
Then in the bottom of the 13th, Jeff Brigham ran into trouble himself for the Elks. Brigham walked the leadoff hitter, then after two quick outs, Brigham walked another batter, bringing the hot hitting Eric Lane to the plate. Lane delivered again with a 2 out double, but Marshall Zanyick, who was on 2nd at the time of the double, was thrown out by Elks Right fielder Maffei at the plate, ending the game and sending the Elks home with the win.
Joey McClung got the win after pitching a scoreless 3 innings, giving up no hits and striking out two. The Elks will travel down to Longview tomorrow to take on the Cowlitz Black Bears to make up a game that was rained out before returning home Tuesday to open a 9 game home stand with the same Cowlitz Black Bears, first pitch on both days scheduled for 6:35.
