Bend Elks News Release

The Bend Elks responded in a big way Saturday night, capitalizing on a Cowlitz loss and benefitting from 4 error s from Klamath Falls, beating the Gems 8-3.

The Elks got on the board first in the top of the second as Tyler Christian hit a two home run to give the Elks an early 2-0 lead. Klamath would respond with three in the fourth off of Elks starter Brandon Brennan (3-1) , but those would be the only runs they would manage off the Elks starter, who would go 6 innings in the win. Bo Cornish had a 2 run double and Graham Saiko had an RBI single in the inning.

The Elks responded with three runs in each the fifth and sixth to help them regain an 8-3 lead. In the fifth, Klamath starter Josh Ferrell walked two batters, then committed an error, followed by another walk to score the first run of the inning, and that would be the end of his night. The Elks would proceed to add another run on a sacrifice fly from Michael Benjamin and an RBI double from Ryan Dunn.

In the sixth, Royce Bollinger walked, stole second, then after Nick Wagner singled him over to third, Wagner attempted to steal second, and an error by the catcher allowed Bollinger to score and advanced Wagner to third. Justin Maffei followed with an RBI single, stole second, then Donald Collins hit an RBI double to bring him home to give the Elks the third run of the inning off of Gems reliever Drew Sandler.

That would be all of the scoring until the bottom of the ninth as the Gems managed one run off the Elks closer Jeff Brigham in a non-save situation, as Tom DaBoy singled to score Richard Sanguinetti to give the final 8-4 mark.

The Elks regained a half game lead over Cowlitz, who lost to the Walla Walla Sweets 5-1 Saturday. The Black Bears magic number stands at three, meaning a combination of three Bears wins or Elks losses would give Cowlitz the final playoff spot. The Elks play their last regular season league game Sunday against the Gems.
