EL Honors Players of the Week

July 28, 2003 - Eastern League (EL1) News Release

Trenton Thunder catcher Dioner Navarro has been named the Eastern League's Chevrolet Player of the Week for the week ending July 27th. Dioner, a native of Caracas, Venezuela, hit .552 with two doubles, two home runs, nine RBI, eight runs scored, three walks, a .594 on-base percentage and a slugging percentage of .828 in seven games last week. The 19-year old had multiple hits in all seven games he played in last week and currently has an 18-game hitting streak during which he is batting .448 with a pair of home runs, 12 runs scored and 16 RBI. Dioner, who is hitting .359 with 24 RBI and 18 runs scored since making his Double-A debut with the Thunder on June 17, was signed by the New York Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on August 21, 2000.

Brad Halsey, a left-handed pitcher for the Trenton Thunder, is the Eastern League's Chevrolet Pitcher of the Week for the week ending July 27th. The Austin, Texas native was 2-0 with 14 strikeouts and a 2.40 ERA last week. In his first start of the week, the 22-year old struck out seven batters and walked one while scattering two runs on seven hits in 7.1 innings of work to earn a win against the Reading Phillies at Waterfront Park. In his second start of the week 6'1", 180 lb. hurler gave up two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out seven batters against the New Haven Ravens at Yale Field on Sunday, improving his record to 3-3 and lowering his ERA to 4.14 on the season. Halsey was selected by the New York Yankees out of the University of Texas in the eighth round of the June 2002 draft.
