Duluth-Superior Dukes News Release

Whoever said that learning can't be fun? Wade Stadium will be turned into a giant classroom when over 1,000 elementary students attend "Education Day," a field trip opportunity hosted by the Duluth-Superior Dukes baseball team.

"Education Day" will feature instructional sessions (taught by Dukes coaches and players) on math, geography, spelling, and writing and how these subjects pertain to real-life situations, including professional baseball. Following the lessons, all students are invited to watch the Dukes take on the St. Paul Saints at 12:05 pm.

"We, at the Dukes are very enthusiastic about Education Day," said Becky Kimber-Carlson, the Director of Community Relations. "This event is a fun way for kids to see that you really do need an education, in sports and in real-life."

The mastermind behind this event is Dukes field manager, Al Gallagher. Along with having 37 years of professional baseball experience, Gallagher also has a Master's degree in Physical Education from Fresno State and was a sixth grade teacher for 10 years.

"In my experience, I have found that baseball can be used as a mechanism to teach all subjects," Gallagher said. "Education Day will show the relevance of baseball to society and enhance the educational process to our children."

"Education Day" will be held on May 30th, from 10:00-11:30 am, followed by the Dukes baseball game versus arch-rival St. Paul Saints. The cost of "Education Day" is $5 per student, which includes the lessons as well as a hot dog, soft drink, and admission to the game.

Limited spots are available, but time is running out! To reserve your school's spot, please contact Becky Kimber-Carlson at 218.727.4525.
