May 20, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Winnipeg Ice News Release
To no one's surprise the Winnipeg ICE and Edmonton Oil Kings needed extra time to decide the opening game of the WHL's Eastern Conference Championship Series.
Tyler Horstmann's goal 67 seconds into overtime game the Oil Kings a 5-4 victory to draw first blood in the best of 7 series.
Winnipeg's Mikey Milne and Edmonton's Dylan Guenther exchanged first period goals.
A shorthanded goal by Simon Kubicek, power play marker from Guenther and even strength goal by Logan Dowhaniuk gave the visitors a 4-1 lead through 40 minutes.
Ben Zloty scored twice early in the third period before Owen Pederson tied the game for the ICE on the power play.
Edmonton outshot Winnipeg 40-26. The ICE went 2/6 on the powerplay while the Oil Kings were 1/4.
Between the pipes, Daniel Hauser stopped 17 of 21 for Winnipeg to start the game. Gage Alexander came in relief to make 18 of 19 saves over the final 33:33.
Edmonton's Sebastian Cossa earned the win making 22 saves.
The two teams play again at 7:00 Saturday night at the ICE Cave inside Wayne Fleming Arena.
