Edmonton Capitals News Release
Scottsdale, AZ - The Edmonton Capitals unveiled their 2011 Spring Training schedule featuring a series of games against Major League opponents. The Caps have seven games lined up so far between now and their regular season opener May 26th in Calgary.
The only reason the Capitals have an extensive pre-season roster against such quality opponents is a direct result of the relationships both Caps Director, Baseball Operations Gord Gerlach and Field Manager Orv Franchuk have established with colleagues in various Major League organizations.
"It's not easy lining up these games." explained Gerlach. "Major League teams don't typically entertain any kind of offers like this from Independent teams. It turns into a win-win situation because their young kids get to face our more experienced players and we get in some much needed innings. We'll see some pitchers that have some sharp breaking balls and fast balls in the 92 - 93 miles per hour range. You just don't always know where those pitches are going."
The Capitals will face the extended spring training rosters of the Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs, and San Francisco Giants. Most of those rosters are comprised with young prospects that have carried over from the Major League spring training and will be assigned to either Class 'A' ball or Rookie Ball. Occasionally some players from the Major League, triple 'A' and double 'AA' ranks will also be on a rehab or a conditioning assignment.
Pitchers and catchers reported Friday for Capitals spring training while the rest of the position players checked in on Saturday. All players have passed their physicals and practice sessions have begun.
The Edmonton Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Capitals season seats start at under $9 per game and individual game tickets are available starting at just $10 every game. The Caps Home Opener is scheduled for Tuesday, May 31st at TELUS Field. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, at (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
