St. John's Edge News Release

St. John's, NL - The St. John's Edge finished up their 5-game road trip on Wednesday night, falling to the Saint John Riptide 94-91 at Harbour Station in Saint John, NB.

It was going to be a battle from the beginning for the Edge, they were without Carl English who was placed on IR earlier this week and Glen Davis was on the bench but remained out of the lineup to rest. From the get-go, it was tough for the Edge to find a rhythm and in the process, the Riptide got out to an early lead. The tide would turn around the 5-minute mark of the quarter when rookie Jared Nickens would hit a big three, then come back down on the very next possession and bury a long two to cut the lead to just 3. Both teams exchanged buckets near the end of the quarter and would head to the second with the Riptide in the lead 22-19.

At the start of the second Saint John controlled the pace again, some key misses and offensive rebounds would force the Edge to have to climb their way back into this one. Junior Cadougan and Dez Lee were doing all they could on the offensive end, but the key factor was the rebounding advantage Saint John was compiling through the night. The Edge would be able to take advantage of the Riptide's high turnover rate and take the 43-42 lead going into the half.

Out of the break, the Edge would get some solid production out of Jarryn Skeete who saw some extra minutes in this one. Skeete would hit a couple of jumpers to reduce the Riptide lead in the middle of the quarter. Saint John held the size advantage on the floor but could not pull away with this one as they committed several turnovers that resulted in Edge baskets. After three quarters, the Riptide held the 65-57 advantage.

As the final quarter began the Edge would look to Obie Oleka to try and even up the rebounding numbers. Oleka would score 4 points in the early stages of the quarter to bring the Edge back to within 2 possessions. However, Oleka would also be in foul trouble for most of the game and would pick up his sixth foul with just over 7 minutes remaining. After the Riptide called a timeout, the Edge offence found a spark and pull ahead by a basket, capped off by an Isaiah Tate II jumper. In the late stages of this one, both teams would trade buckets, bringing the score to 89-89 with under a minute remaining. Following a Riptide layup and free-throws they would hold a 94-91 lead with 3 seconds remaining, the Edge had the final shot but could not drop the long three-point attempt and that is how this one ended.

On the night the Edge were buoyed by the offensive production of Junior Cadougan and Dez Lee. Cadougan would drop 25 points on the night after he had 32 a night prior. Lee would finish with 21 points to help the cause. As a team, the Edge bench would outscore the Riptide bench 32-22, on the strength of 10 points from Jared Nickens.

For the Riptide, they were led offensively by TJ Maston who scored a game-high 26 points in the win.

The Edge will now travel back to St. John's tomorrow and get ready to take on the Windsor Express at home on Friday night and Sunday afternoon. Game time for Friday is set for 7:00 PM NLT and will feature entertainment from N.E.W Wrestling.
