St. John's Edge News Release

St. John's, NL - The St. John's Edge dropped their first game on their 5-game road trip on Sunday afternoon to the Halifax Hurricanes by a score of 104-98.

The Edge got off to a quick start in this one, they went on an 8-0 run with just under 10 minutes left in the first quarter. The story in the first was the inside play of Obie Oleka who scored 6 quick points early on and forced the Hurricanes to change it up defensively. After a Halifax timeout, the tide shifted in favour of the Hurricanes as they got themselves back into this one tying it up at 13. This one would go back and forth until the end of the quarter, but Edge would come out of the first with the lead at 27-25.

Into the second quarter, the back and forth continued. The Edge kept pouring on the offence early, they got contributions out of several players to keep their lead. The Hurricanes would look to Mike Poole to get them back in the driver's seat, as he would drop 11 points in the quarter. In the last few minutes of the half, the Edge would be stopped on a couple of possessions and see the Hurricanes convert at the other end. Going into the break it was Halifax ahead 52-43.

After the half-time break, the Edge refocused and got off to another quick start. Dez Lee and Glen 'Big Baby' Davis would get the scoring going and play some big minutes in the quarter to keep the game close. With less than 5 minutes left in the quarter, Diego Kapelan would be fouled from behind the three-point line and convert on all attempts to make it a one-point game in favour of the Hurricanes. A 7-0 run at around the 3-minute mark would vault the Hurricanes back into the lead. Going into the final quarter it was Halifax back up 76-67.

With just 12 minutes left the Edge looked to regain their composure and climb back into this one. Throughout the quarter, Dez Lee and Junior Cadougan were finding their way to the rim and through contact to convert to keep the game close. As the game drew to a close, both teams were trying to find a way to score. Late in this one, a turnover by the Hurricanes led to a quick Junior Cadougan layup, but it was too late as Halifax would close this one out and take the game by a score of 104-98.

On the afternoon the Edge shot 47.3% from the floor (35-for-74) and won the battle in the paint outscoring the Hurricanes 50-32. There were 7 ties and 12 lead changes in this one as it was back and forth throughout.

Offensively for the Edge, all five starters finished in double-digits with Glen Davis leading the way with 22 points, his fourth game in a row with 20 or more. Behind Davis was Junior Cadougan who had another 20 point performance and racked up 8 assists. Diego Kapelan also had another impressive game with 19 points on 4-for-9 shooting from three-point range. Dez Lee contributed 15 points and Obie Oleka dropped 14 points and pulled down 14 boards for the double-double.

For the Hurricanes they were led all afternoon by Mike Poole who scored a game-high 31 points in the win.
