St. John's Edge News Release
St. John's, NL - On Sunday afternoon the St. John's Edge completed a two-game series against the Windsor Express at Mile One Centre. After the Edge took the first one in comeback fashion, they did the same thing on Sunday in front of 4,584 fans, defeating Windsor by a score of 115-107.
The start of this game had a different feel from Friday's game, the Edge looked locked in from the very beginning and ready to complete the homestand with a win. Shaquille Keith would be the x-factor in the first quarter, he stepped on the floor for the Edge for the first time and made an immediate impact. With Keith bringing the ball up the floor and being able to work down low, it created some great looks for Glen Davis who continued his work in the paint dropping 10 in the first quarter alone. On the other side of the ball, the Edge were trying to stop the offensive attack of both Horace Wormley and Chris Jones. The two combined to score 29 of Windsor's 31 points in the quarter as they went into the second up 31-29.
The second quarter the Express would take control and go on a quick run to stretch their lead. The teams from this point on would trade buckets in the middle part of the quarter, with St. John's unable to gain much ground on the Express. In the final few minutes of the half, the Edge would trim the lead to just a single point, but Windsor's Chris Jones would be fouled from beyond the arc and bury all three attempts to put the Express up 58-54 heading into the break.
Out of the break, the Edge came out looking to give these fans what they wanted. The team would go on a quick 8-0 run that was capped off by an Olu Ashaolu bucket down low, putting the Edge in front by four points. Windsor would continue to shoot the ball well from beyond the arc to keep them in the lead until the four-minute mark where the Edge would put together another little run to reclaim the lead. A couple of turnovers in the late moments of the quarter would result in Windsor taking back their lead heading into the final 12 minutes by a score of 85-82.
Into the fourth, the Edge were looking to find a way to stop the two-headed monster of Chris Jones and Horace Wormley who were on fire from everywhere on the floor. Jumping ahead to the final 6 minutes, the Edge would take advantage of some misses by the Express and convert on their second chance opportunities. Down the stretch, Diego Kapelan and Glen 'Big Baby' Davis would not let the lead go back to Windsor. Kapelan was as sharp as any Edge player has been all year and Davis continued to make quick work of defenders down low as they Edge would go on to take this one 115-107.
Big Baby was the leader again in this one, the veteran Forward dropped 32 points and had 16 rebounds. From outside, Diego Kapelan could not be stopped, he shot 6-for-9 from downtown, good enough for 22 points on the night. Another big night from Isaiah Tate II as he dropped 15 points. Rounding out the scorers in double digits, the Edge had Olu Ashaolu and Junior Cadougan combine for 21 points. The story of the night was Shaquille Keith, who made an immediate impact in his debut. Keith's ability to work off the dribble and score in the low post was a threat for the Windsor defenders all night long.
For Windsor, Chris Jones dropped a game-high 33 points and Horace Wormley would drop 32 in a losing cause.
The Edge will have a day off tomorrow and then hit the road on Tuesday for 4 games in 6 days in Ontario. They will kick off the road trip in Windsor on Tuesday night. You can catch that game and all Edge games this season on www.nblclive.ca.
