St. John's Edge News Release

St. John's, NL - The St. John's Edge came into this one looking to complete the season sweep against the Cape Breton Highlanders. The Edge had defeated the Highlanders three times on the road and were coming off of a win over them at Mile One Centre on Sunday afternoon. This one was no different as the Edge would go on to defeat Cape Breton by a score of 105-92.

In the first game of this two-game series, the Edge got off to a quick start and kept the Highlanders from ever reclaiming a lead. This one had a similar start, but the Highlanders did climb back into it in the 3rd quarter on the back of a game-high 34 points by Devin Sweetney.

The Edge were off to another hot start in this one as they would go on a 13-0 run to begin the game. 6 of their 13 points were scored on three-pointers with Dez Lee and Russell Byrd draining a couple of triples to widen that gap. The scoring in the first would be capped off by Jared Nickens who drilled an open three in transition to put the Edge up 30-16 through one-quarter of play.

With the second quarter kicking off, the coaching staff would look to the bench to give the starters some rest and leave it in the hands of a bench that was on fire in the previous match-up. Isaiah Tate II would leave his mark on the quarter drilling a three-ball and cutting through the Highlander defence to drop an acrobatic layup. Following a Tate II layup, the Highlanders would string together a couple of successful possessions to bring the game to within 4 points at the halfway mark.

However, after a Glen 'Big Baby' Davis converted and-1 opportunity, the Edge would get a Nickens triple and then near the end of the quarter, newcomer Murphy Burnatowski would drain a three of his own to send the game into the half with the Edge up 50-43.

As the teams returned for the second half of action it was more of a back and forth battle in the early going. In contrast to the last game where the Edge took advantage of a tired Highlanders team. The Highlanders would continue to chip away at the Edge lead and would eventually tie the game up on a Devin Sweetney three with 4:27 to go in the third quarter. As the teams exchanged free-throws at the end of the quarter, we would see this one go into the fourth with the Edge up 73-72.

The coaching staff said the right things in the huddle during the break, as the Edge would come out on fire. A very quick 10-0 run capped off by a Junior Cadougan coast-to-coast layup would put the Edge back in the driver's seat with just over 9 minutes left in the game. Following a timeout by Cape Breton they would get a couple of scores back, but then the momentum would seem to shift for good when Junior Cadougan dove on a loose ball in the offensive end and with the shot clock at one-second Jared Nickens would heave up a prayer that would go down, erupting the Mile One Centre crowd. Some solid defence late and a couple of big three's would give the Edge all they needed to walk away with the 105-92 win at home.

It was the unfamiliar faces that were the stars for the Edge in this one as Jared Nickens led all Edge scorers with 22 points off the bench on 6-of-9 shooting from three-point range. Newcomer, Murphy Burnatowski would have another great game, dropping 19 points and another 3 blocks in this one. Dez Lee would also have himself a game, dropping 15 points and grabbing 14 rebounds for the double-double. Guard Junior Cadougan had another solid day at the point, collecting 12 assists to go along with 9 points.

Another huge night from the Edge bench, as they combined for 44 points in this one, while there were 5 Edge players in double-digit scoring, with every player who suited up, had at least 2 points.

For the Highlanders, they were led by Devin Sweetney who dropped a game-high 34 points in the second straight loss.

The Edge will now have to wait a week and a day for their next opponent, as they welcome the KW Titans to town on March 12th and 13th. Both games are student nights, by showing a student or staff ID you can purchase your ticket at the box office for just $10.00. Be sure to get yours early by calling 576-7657 or by visiting the Mile One Centre box office.
