Eddies Face Miami FC in Penultimate Match of Spring Season

May 27, 2016 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
FC Edmonton News Release

FC Edmonton (4-2-2) heads to Florida for the first-ever meeting between themselves and the Miami FC (0-3-4), May 28 at 6:00 p.m. MT. The Eddies will be looking to extend their five-match undefeated streak against a winless Miami side and move one step closer to capturing their first Spring Season Championship.

The Eddies have been on a tear lately despite playing six matches in 19 days; vaulting up the league table to second place overall, one point shy of the first-place New York Cosmos with 14 points. Defence has been the name of the game for the Edmonton side, who currently hold the lowest goals against in the league with five allowed through eight matches. The team has found success this year on set pieces and are led in goals scored by striker Jake Keegan and centre back Papé Diakité who have registered two apiece. Since returning from injury, left back Adam Eckersley has also contributed to the team's attack, earning a goal and an assist over the past three weeks of play.

Expansion side The Miami FC have struggled in their inaugural season. The team sits bottom of the NASL table and have been unable to enter the win column yet this season. Led by former Serie A defender-turned-head-coach Alessandro Nesta, the team made a splash over the past two weeks with the purchase of former Jacksonville Armada captain Richie Ryan and the acquistion of Sierra Leone international midfielder Michael Lahoud through transfer. Miami has surrendered a league-high 12 goals in 2016, contributing to their three point overall total as they enter Week 9 action.

Saturday's match is arguably one of the Eddies largest in team history and a positive result Saturday would put pressure on several other teams currently bidding for a shot at the league's Spring Championship. Both Minnesota United FC and Indy Eleven trail the Eddies by a single point with a game in hand. with anything less than a win by both clubs would favouring the Eddies, whose league-low goals against would give them an advantage in the league's tiebreaker scenario.

"I'm excited to see the team play again," FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller said. "We have done very well away from home and I've said before that we're quite dangerous on the road because of how we set up. The team is playing well and we deserve to be where we are at this moment in the league. It is a confident group at the moment and hopefully we can carry this momentum forward. We have to make sure we keep doing the right things, that's the message. Keep doing the right things and keep it simple."

FC Edmonton travel to Florida to face expansion side Miami FC, 6:00 p.m. MT on May 28 at FIU Stadium. The match will be broadcast live on beIN Sports. Viewers will be required to purchase a beIN SPORTS subscription to watch the match.

The team returns to Clarke Field for their Spring Season finale versus Fort Lauderdale Strikers, June 12 at 2:00 p.m. For more tickets and more information, please click HERE, call 780.700.2600 or visit www.fcedmonton.com.
