Columbus Lions News Release
COLUMBUS, GA (January 6, 2010) - Adding another possible weapon at the wide receiver position, the Columbus Lions of the Southern Indoor Football League signed one of quarterback Todd Spitzer's favorite targets from his college days in Eddie Cohen.
In 2007, Cohen (5'11 200, Western Carolina) set the Western Carolina single season record with 1,208 receiving yards and nine touchdowns becoming just the ninth Catamount receiver all-time to break 1,000-yard plateau earning him a first-team All-Southern Conference selection. The Associated Press and The Sports Network also tabbed Eddie on the second team All America list twice.
Cohen and Spitzer hooked up for many big plays numerous times during the 2007 season including an 82-yard touchdown reception at Appalachian State, the longest scoring play in the Southern Conference that season. Eddie concluded his Catamount career with 142 catches, 2,173 yards, and 15 touchdowns. In 2008, Cohen saw limited action with the CFL's Hamilton Tigers grabbing 15 receptions for 197 yards and one touchdown.
"We continue to add depth at the receiver position mostly because there are so many skill guys out there this season, it's hard to pass up the kind of talent that Eddie possess" says Lions Head Coach Jason Gibson. "Our camp is going to be extremely competitive at all positions but the wide receiver spot will be the most interesting of them all."
The Lions also added Frank Fields (6'5 259, NC State) as a possible offensive and defensive lineman. A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Frank was recruited at NC State as a tight end.
The Columbus Lions last tryout, was set to be conducted this weekend in Orlando, FL, has been cancelled due to the poor playing surface in the Citrus Bowl from all the bowl games that took place from previous weeks. For those players that were planning on attending the open tryout, a final tryout is being reviewed and they should contact the Lions front office immediately at 706-322-3336 or by email at jeff@columbuslions.net to discuss alternate arrangements.
