Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- One team battling for top spot in the Eastern Confernece goes up against another playing for their Western Hockey League playoff lives Tuesday night in Brandon as the Wheat Kings play host to the Regina Pats.

The Wheat Kings, who had their 7-game winning streak snapped Saturday night in Saskatoon, will be hoping to regain first place as the Blades are idle until Wednesday. Entering Tuesday night's game, Brandon is 37-16-1-3, good for 77 points and a share of top spot with Saskatoon. The Blades, however, have played three fewer games. They take on the Swift Current Broncos on Wednesday.

While Brandon is battling Saskatoon and the U.S. Division leading Tri-City Americans for the League lead, the Regina Pats sit in the basement of the Eastern Division with a record of 24-25-3-4. Their 55 points leaves them in tenth place in the Conference and five back of the Moose Jaw Warriors in the race for the eighth and final playoff berth.

Losers of three straight Overtime Shootout decisions last week, the Pats are coming into Tuesday night's game having collected a least a point in four straight games. On Saturday night, they scored a dramatic upset win over the visiting Kootenay Ice.

Regina is led by all star Jordan Eberle, who was the subject of much trade discussion during last month's deadline. In 41 games this season, the Edmonton Oilers' prospect sits second in the WHL scoring race with a league leading 39 goals and 79 points. That leaves him two points behind Craig Cunningham of the Vancouver Giants.

The Wheat Kings meanwhile have been led recently by the likes of veterans Matt Calvert and Aaron Lewadniuk. Both go into the week riding personal 8-game point scoring streaks. During that stretch of games, Calvert has five goals and 12 points while Lewadniuk is 7-2-9.

Tuesday's game is a presentation of the Manitoba Canola Growers Association and will be one of two home games for the Wheat Kings this week. On Friday night, Brandon will entertain Cody Eakin and the Swift Current Broncos.

Tickets for both games this week are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca.
