Eastern League Names Pitcher and Player of the Week

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of May 7th through May 13th:

Reading Phillies first baseman Darin Ruf has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of May 7th-May 13th. The 25-year old batted .455 (10-for-22) with three doubles, three home runs, 12 RBI, six runs scored, three walks and a 1.000 slugging percentage in six games for the R-Phils last week. Ruf, who is a native of Omaha, Nebraska, reached base in all six games he played in last week and had four multiple hit games, including going 3-for-3 with a homer and four RBI on Wednesday and going 2-for-4 with a grand slam and six RBI on Thursday. Those performances capped a streak of four consecutive games with a home run for Ruf. The 6'3", 220 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players with his 12 RBI last week and he also finished ranked among the weekly league leaders in total bases (22-2nd), slugging percentage (1.000-2nd), OPS (1.538-2nd), runs scored (6-tied 2nd), extra-base hits (6-tied 2nd), doubles (3-tied 2nd), homers (3-tied 2nd), batting average (.455-tied 3rd), on-base percentage (.538-4th) and hits (10-tied 4th). Darin, who currently the Eastern League leader in batting average (.383), RBI (27), hits (49) and total bases (76), was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 20th round of the 2009 draft out of Creighton University.

Julio Rodriguez, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Reading Phillies, has been named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 7th-May 13th. The 6'4", 195 lb. hurler started two games for the R-Phils last week and had a record of 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 11.0 innings pitched. Rodriguez, who is a native of Toa Alta, Puerto Rico, made his first start of the week on Tuesday night against the visiting Trenton Thunder and scattered four hits and four walks over five shutout innings while striking out five batters in a no-decision. The 21-year old gave up one unearned run over six innings to earn the win in his second appearance of the week on Sunday afternoon at New Britain. He struck out three and walked five while giving up just one hit in a Reading's 6-4 victory. Rodriguez tied for third among all Eastern League pitchers in innings pitched last week (11.0), tied for fifth in strikeouts (8) and ranked sixth in batting average against (.143). Julio, who was named to the Florida State League All-Star Team last season after posting a record of 16-7 with 168 strikeouts and a 2.76 ERA over 156.2 innings pitched with the Clearwater Threshers, was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the eighth round of the 2008 draft out of the Puerto Rican Baseball Academy.
