Eastern League Announces Weekly Award Winners

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the week ending May 17th:

Akron Aeros outfielder Nick Weglarz has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending May 17th. The 21-year old batted .458 (11-for-24) with three doubles, one home run, eight RBI, six runs scored, seven walks and a .708 slugging percentage while helping lead the first place Aeros to a record of 5-3 in eight games during the week. Weglarz, who is a native of Stevensville, Ontario, reached base in each of the eight games he played in during the week and had four multiple hit games, including going 2-for-4 with a game-winning three-run homer in the eighth inning of a 5-3 win at Altoona on Friday night. The 6'3", 245 lb. slugger struggled in the opening month of the season but is hitting .444 (20-for-45) with six doubles, three home runs, 20 RBI, 10 runs scored, a .544 on-base percentage and a .778 slugging percentage in 14 games in the month of May. He has reached base in 11 straight games and is currently tied for fifth in the league in RBI (26), tied for sixth in walks (20) and tied for seventh in runs scored (21). Nick, who hit .272 with 68 runs scored in 106 games for the Class-A Kinston Indians last season, was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 3rd round of the 2005 draft out of Lakeshore Catholic High School in Stevensville, Ontario.

Jake Arrieta, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Bowie Baysox, is the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 17th. The 6'4", 225 lb. hurler made a pair of starts for the Baysox last week and was 2-0 with 16 strikeouts and a 0.75 ERA in 12 innings pitched. Arrieta, who is a native of Farmington, Missouri, made his first appearance of the week last Monday night at Akron and gave up one run on four hits while striking out six batters and walking two in five innings of work to earn the win in Bowie's 3-1 victory. In his second start of the week the 23-year old gave up just one hit, struck out 10 batters and walked three while throwing the first complete game shutout in the league this season in a 4-0 win against Erie at Prince George's Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Arrieta has given up one earned run or less in five of his seven starts for the Baysox this season and is currently ranked second in the league in strikeouts (42) and tied for second in wins (4). Jake, who was named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Year after going 6-5 with 120 strikeouts and a 2.87 ERA while making his professional debut with the Frederick Keys last season, was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 5th round of the 2007 draft out of Texas Christian University.
