THE MATCHUP
The South Carolina Stingrays host the Wheeling Nailers for Game 6 of the 2016 Eastern Conference Finals this evening. Entering tonight's contest, the Stingrays lead the series, 3-2. South Carolina claimed a pair of victories in Wheeling last week to grab hold of a series lead. The Stingrays enjoyed two comeback victories, winning 2-1 in Game 4, and claiming a 3-1 win in Game 5 at WesBanco Arena. Both squads are coming off lengthy series in the Conference Semifinals. The Stingrays defeated Adirondack in double-overtime in Game 7 on a Joe Devin goal, while the Nailers took down the Reading Royals in Game 7 in overtime on a Riley Brace goal. The Stingrays and Nailers met twice during the regular season with both games taking place in Wheeling. South Carolina was 1-1-0-0 versus the Nailers in those games. The winner of the Eastern Conference Finals will play the Allen Americans in the 2016 Kelly Cup Finals. The Americans advanced to the Finals with a 4-1 series win over the Fort Wayne Komets.
GAME 5 RECAP
The South Carolina Stingrays scored twice in the third period in Game 5 to earn a 3-1 victory, and take a 3-2 series lead. The Stingrays broke a 1-1 tie at 12:43 of the third period on David Pacan's third goal of the playoffs. Stephan Vigier added an empty net tally and Colton Saucerman also scored in the game. Netminder Vitek Vanecek stopped 27 shots to earn his sixth win of the postseason.
TOP NETMINDERS
Entering tonight's contest, the Stingrays have the top two goaltenders in the ECHL's postseason. Injured netminder Mark Dekanich owns the top goals-against average at 1.86 with a 5-4 record through 10 appearances. He leads the ECHL with two shutouts and owns a .922 save-percentage. He has not played since Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Vitek Vanecek is second in goals against average at 1.86, and has posted a 6-2 record in nine appearances. He owns a .929 save percentage, the best mark in the league, and has one shutout.
PACAN AND FYTEN ROLLING
With David Pacan's goal, assisted by Austin Fyten, in Game 5, both forwards extended lengthy point-streaks. Fyten has points in nine straight games (four goals, six assists), while Pacan has points in eight straight contests (three goals, six assists).
LEADING SCORERS
Forward Austin Fyten leads the Stingrays in playoff scoring with 17 points (seven goals, 10 assists) in 17 games. He ranks seventh in the ECHL for scoring in the postseason. Wheeling is led by defenseman Mathew Maione who has collected 19 points (five goals, 14 assists) in 18 games. Both Fyten (three goals, three assists) and Maione (six assists) have six points in the series, leading their respective clubs.
POWERED BY THE PENALTY KILL
The Stingrays boast the top penalty kill (89.0%) in the playoffs, while the Nailers have the second best penalty kill at 87.1%. Each team is just 2/18 on the power play in the series thus far.
