MWL1 Quad Cities River Bandits

East staves off West, 4-2

June 21, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Eastern Division team held off the Western Division squad on Tuesday night, utilizing three runs in the second inning to win the 2005 Midwest League Summer All-Star Classic at O'Brien Field. Matt Shepherd and Brady Toops both reached base for the Western Division's team, and pitchers Mike Sillman and Jaymie Torres each tossed .1 innings in the losing effort.

Shepherd hit second in the lineup for the West, and bounced a single up the middle off South Bend's A.J. Shappi in the first. The base knock was the only blemish on Shappi's line, as the hurler would pick up the win in the ballgame. Shepherd finished the game 1-for-2, and played five full innings before being taken down in the top of the sixth inning.

Toops was slated to hit eighth in the lineup, and drew a walk off the Fort Wayne Wizards' Michael Ekstrom in the second inning. That proved to be the only at-bat for the backstop, who was removed from the game after three full innings of work.

A Swing of the Quad Cities pitcher did not enter the game until the eighth inning. Jaymie Torres relieved Clinton's Eric Hurley with two outs, and allowed Fort Wayne's Chris Kolkhorst to single before retiring South Bend's Alberto Gonzalez on a force out.

Sillman, the Western Division saves leader, entered the game with two outs in the top of the ninth. Lansing's Curtis Thigpen promptly ripped a ball passed the third baseman, and South Bend's Carlos Gonzalez hit a ground ball through the right side before the submariner closed out the frame by inducing a popout from South Bend's Allen Mottram.

For the East South Bend's Jereme Milons provided the big bat with a two-run single in the second, followed by an RBI double in the fourth inning. His 19-year-old teammate, Carlos Gonzalez, added three hits in five at-bats and scored a run to boot.

Fort Wayne's Matt Varner picked up the save with a scoreless ninth, despite allowing two hits.

No player for the West recorded more then one hit on the evening, but Wisconsin's Asdrubal Cabrera and Clinton's Emerson Frostad registered the squad's two RBI. Burlington's Luis Cota picked up the loss, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk in the decisive second inning.

UPCOMING HOMESTAND: After four road games, the Swing return home for their first home series of the second half against Wisconsin from Monday, June 27, through Wednesday, June 29. Tuesday's game will be Black and Gold Night as well as DARE Night at John O'Donnell Stadium, while Wednesday's game will be a Hooters/97 Rock Beverage Night, John Deere Collector's Night, and Beach Party theme night with the Swing. Tickets are available by calling (563) 328-2000.
