San Jose Earthquakes News Release


The San Jose Earthquakes will try to extend their home unbeaten streak to seven games as they host Vancouver Whitecaps FC for the first time on Wednesday, July 20 at Buck Shaw Stadium. The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on Comcast SportsNet California, 1220 KDOW and 1370 KZSF.

The Quakes will then travel to Sandy, Utah for a tilt with Real Salt Lake on Saturday, July 23 at Rio Tinto Stadium. The match kicks off at 7 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on Comcast SportsNet California, 1220 KDOW (English) and 1370 KZSF (Spanish).

The San Jose Earthquakes posted their second straight shutout to earn a 0-0 draw Saturday night against the Columbus Crew at Crew Stadium. Quakes goalkeeper Jon Busch made six saves and Crew goalkeeper Will Hesmer made five saves to post shutouts. Busch earned his sixth shutout of the season, while the Quakes fired 19 shots in the match but could not beat Hesmer.

Last Game vs. Whitecaps

Earthquakes 1, Vancouver Whitecaps 1; May 12, 2011; Empire Field; Vancouver, British Columbia

The first ever meeting between the two clubs ended as a 1-1 draw in Vancouver. Chris Wondolowski scored a 39th minute goal on an assist from Ryan Johnson, and the Earthquakes dominated for most of the game. But the Whitecaps found a way to equalize in second half stoppage time as Davide Chiumiento scored his first goal of the season to save Vancouver from a loss.

Last Game vs. Real Salt Lake

The San Jose Earthquakes fell in their season opener 1-0 against Real Salt Lake on a rain-drenched field on March 19 at Buck Shaw Stadium. Kyle Beckerman scored the game winner in the 63rd minute, blasting a shot from 25 yards out off the left post and in. The Earthquakes made a fervent push to find an equalizer and had several chances to score, but ultimately fell short. Simon Dawkins made his San Jose debut and nearly created a goal after darting up the middle and sliding a pass that found Chris Wondolowski in the area. The 2010 Budweiser Golden Boot winner pounded a shot on goal, but Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando got a hand to the shot while diving to his right.

Misc. Notes

Convey, Wondolowski Named to AT&T MLS All-Star Game Day Roster

San Jose Earthquakes stars Chris Wondolowski and Bobby Convey were named to the AT&T MLS All-Star game day roster by All-Star coach Hans Backe today. The duo will suit up for MLS on July 27 at Red Bull Arena against Manchester United. The match kicks off at 5:30 p.m. PT on ESPN2, Galavision and TSN. Convey will make his second consecutive appearance for the MLS All Stars while Wondolowski was tabbed for the first time.

Unbeaten in Last Six at Home

The Earthquakes are unbeaten in their last six MLS regular season games at home. The club is 3-0-3 and has outscored opponents 9-3 during the streak. San Jose's last loss at home was a 2-1 result against Chivas USA on April 23.

Boot it Like Bingham Goes Viral

Earthquakes goalkeeper David Bingham's goal has been viewed nearly 1.5 million times since he scored a 90-yard goal in a 2-1 win against English Premier League side West Bromwich Albion last week at Buck Shaw Stadium. Bingham launched the ball from the edge of his own box and found the net on one hop. The video can be found in the Earthquakes' YouTube channel.

Quakes Defeat English Premier League Team for First Time in Club History

The San Jose Earthquakes defeated West Bromwich Albion of the English Premier League 2-1 in an international friendly on Tuesday at Buck Shaw Stadium. Quakes goalkeeper David Bingham had the play of the night, sending the ball over 90 yards for a goal after the ball bounced over West Brom net minder Boaz Myhill in the third minute (VIDEO: http://youtu.be/05VhDBSQ8JQ). Khari Stephenson tacked on the eventual game winner in the 45th minute, smashing a shot from 35 yards that darted past Myhill just before the half to give San Jose a 2-0 lead. Jerome Thomas scored the lone goal for West Brom eight minutes into the second half. The win was San Jose's first against an English Premier League opponent. The Quakes previously drew 0-0 against club partner Tottenham Hotspur on July 17, 2010 at Buck Shaw Stadium and tied 1-1 against Aston Villa on May 13, 1997 at Spartan Stadium.

Peterson Debuts for San Jose

Jacob Peterson minted his Earthquakes career on Saturday, getting the start and playing 62 minutes in a 0-0 draw against the Columbus Crew. The midfielder was traded to San Jose along with Nana Attakora and Alan Gordon from Toronto FC in exchange for Ryan Johnson, allocation money and an international player slot.

Earthquakes Acquire Peterson, Attakora, Gordon From Toronto FC

The Earthquakes announced a trade with Toronto FC on July 14 that brought forward Alan Gordon, defender Nana Attakora and midfielder Jacob Peterson to San Jose in exchange for Ryan Johnson, allocation money and an international player slot. San Jose will regain its international slot on Jan. 1, 2013.

Joe Cannon Returns

Long-time Earthquakes goalkeeper and Bay Area native Joe Cannon will return to San Jose for the second time since being selected by Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the 2010 MLS Expansion Draft. Cannon visited the Bay Area for a Reserve League match in San Jose on March 22, a match that the Quakes won 2-1. During his career with the Earthquakes, Cannon started 171 games, won the MLS Cup in 2001, and won MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2002.

Earthquakes Raise $6,000 for Charity

The San Jose Earthquakes raised over $6,000 for charity during its matches against the New York Red Bulls on July 2 at Stanford Stadium and the Philadelphia Union on July 9 at Buck Shaw Stadium. Using money earned through separate promotions, the Earthquakes will donate $1,020 to Wounded Warrior Project, $2,500 to the American Red Cross Silicon Valley Chapter and $2,500 to the ALS Association.

Community MVP Voting

Earthquakes fan Stuart Berman of San Francisco, Calif. has been nominated for MLS Community MVP. One representative from each MLS club's market was picked to participate in a fan vote with the winner earning a $10,000 donation to the charity of their choice. The Earthquakes and Berman have selected R.O.C.K and America SCORES as their charity. Voting began on Friday, July 8 and will end on July 22 at 2 p.m. PT. Earthquakes 4v4, Presented by Wells Fargo

The San Jose Earthquakes will kick off their first 4v4 Tournament presented by Wells Fargo on Saturday, July 23. Registration is open at www.sjearthquakes.com/4v4. The Earthquakes 4v4 Presented by Wells Fargo are adult and youth 4v4 soccer tournaments that will take place on three upcoming weekends. The first tournament is set for July 23 at Independence High School in San Jose, followed by tournaments on Aug. 28 at Cesar Chavez Academy in East Palo Alto and Sept. 18 at Alden Oliver Sports Park in Hayward. Divisions include boys and girls U-8 through U-19, Men's and Women's Rec, Adult CoEd and Men's Open. Prizes will be awarded to the first and second place teams in all divisions. All participants receive an Earthquakes ticket, event t-shirt, and other gifts. There will also be appearances by Earthquakes players. Participation fees are $120 for Youth and Adult Rec, and $150 for Men's Open

Wondolowski Ties De Rosario for No. 3 on Quakes All-Time Scoring Chart

San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski continues to inch up the franchise's all-time scoring charts. Wondo added to his total with a clinical finish against the Chicago Fire in a 2-2 draw on Saturday at Toyota Park, giving him a total of 27 with the Quakes. The Danville, Calif. native is tied with Dwayne De Rosario, who scored 27 for the team from 2001-2005, for No. 3 on the all-time list. The career leader for the Quakes is Ronald Cerritos, who notched 61 from 1997-2001 and in 2005.

Scoring First Under Yallop

During Frank Yallop's first tenure with San Jose, the Earthquakes were one of the best teams in the league when scoring the first goal. The team went 36-2-1 from 2001-03 when scoring the first goal of the game. The Quakes only gave up leads two times in 2002, losing 2-1 to Los Angeles on July 4 and falling 2-1 to Kansas City on July 27. Yallop's team was 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, 12-0-2 in 2010 and so far in 2011 is 3-1-2 when netting the first goal.

Making the First One Count The Earthquakes are 91-6-21 in their last 118 matches when scoring first. They finished 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, went undefeated last year with a 12-0-2 record and are 3-1-2 this season. In 2005, San Jose went undefeated at 14-0-5 when scoring first. The Earthquakes were 25-2-2 in 2001 and 2002 when finding the back of the net first. The Quakes only gave up leads two times in 2002, losing 2-1 to Los Angeles on July 4 and falling 2-1 to Kansas City on July 27. The team continued that trend in 2003, possessing an 11-0-1 mark in the regular season when they scored the first goal. In 2004, the Quakes went 8-1-1 when scoring first, the top mark in MLS. The Quakes gave up their lead and lost to Los Angeles on July 4, 2004 for the first time since July 27, 2002 against Kansas City. The Quakes are also impressive in the playoffs when scoring first, posting a 7-0-0 record.

Hernandez in Quakes' Top-10 List for Career Starts

With his start against the LA Galaxy on June 25, Earthquakes defender Jason Hernandez moved into No. 10 on the club's all-time list for career starts. Hernandez is in his fourth season with San Jose and has started 89 matches during that time. Next on the list is Ian Russell with 91 starts.

Busch the Shot Stopper

Nineteen games into the season, Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch is tied with Matt Reis of the New England Revolution for second in the league in saves with 70. Toronto FC's Stefan Frei leads the pack with 77 saves in 21 matches.

Busch Among MLS Career Leaders for Shutouts

Jon Busch picked up his 59th career clean sheet on July 16 in a 0-0 draw against the Columbus Crew at Columbus Crew Stadium. The Earthquakes' starting goalkeeper is eighth among MLS all-time leaders. He has recorded 13 shutouts in two seasons with San Jose, 21 during three seasons (2007-09) with the Chicago Fire and 25 in five seasons (2002-06) with the Columbus Crew. Next on the list are New England Revolution keeper Matt Reis and former MLS standout Tony Meola with 62.

Wells Fargo Soccer Mom of the Match

Wells Fargo will feature a Soccer Mom of the Match for each Earthquakes home game in 2011. The promotion kicked off on Saturday, June 25 with Tina Castaneda of San Jose taking home the award. One nominated mom will be selected for on-field and video-board recognition prior to kickoff each week. The winner will also receive four match tickets to an Earthquakes home game, a parking pass, and a jersey. They will also have the special privilege to watch pre-game warm ups from the field. The two teams tied 2-2 in the first ever meeting on April 30, 2005 with Alejandro Moreno scoring a late goal for San Jose to tie the game at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City ... The Quakes lost to RSL for the first time in team history on May 31, 2008 when RSL defeated the Quakes 3-1 at Rice-Eccles Stadium ... RSL was an expansion team in 2005, so the Quakes and RSL have only met eleven times in their history, with San Jose winning three times and earning five draws ...
