Earthquakes Acquire Brazilian Forward Pablo Campos

The San Jose Earthquakes announced that they participated in the weighted Major League Soccer lottery and won the rights to Brazilian forward Pablo Campos. Campos had signed a multi-year contract with MLS and was assigned to the Quakes via the lottery. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Campos holds a green card and will not count as an international on the Quakes roster. Campos, 25, most recently played in the Swedish Allsvenskan (premier league in Sweden) with GAIS Göteborg. He played in eight matches with GAIS in 2008. He made the jump to Sweden from the Fresno Fuego in the USL's Premier Development League in the summer of last year. With the Fuego, he made 25 appearances and scored 32 goals over two seasons. In 2007, he was the league leader in goals with 18 and helped lead the Fuego to the league semifinals. In 2008 before his move to GAIS, he had four multi-goal games, including two hat tricks, against the Bakersfield Brigade and the Los Angeles Legends.

Earthquakes Head Back to MLS Central Coast Showcase for the Second Year in a Row

For the second straight year the Earthquakes head south to take part in the MLS Central Coast Showcase at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. The Quakes played two games last year, earning a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Crew with a pair of goals from Kei Kamara and battling to a scoreless draw with D.C. United.

Earthquakes Sign Forward Cam Weaver

The San Jose Earthquakes announced last week that the team signed forward Cam Weaver to a multi-year contract. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. He will be added to the official roster upon receipt of his ITC. Weaver, 25, is a target forward who played for FK Haugesund of the Norwegian Adeccoligaen, the first division in Norway, the past two seasons. In 2008 he scored 11 goals in all competitions, nine in league play and two in the Norwegian Cup. In his last match in Norway on October 25, 2008 Weaver scored two goals in a 4-2 win against Sandnes Ulf. He began his professional career with the Seattle Sounders of the United Soccer League First Division, scoring 18 goals in 27 appearances for the club. That total tied him for the league lead in 2006. He was named Rookie of the Year for his efforts.

Earthquakes Sign Forward Davide Somma to Senior Roster

The San Jose Earthquakes announced last week that the team signed Davide Somma to a senior roster contract. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Somma, 23, spent the last two months of 2008 with the Earthquakes as a developmental player. He appeared in three regular season games for the Quakes, making his debut against Real Salt Lake on Sept. 27, 2008. He played five reserve division matches for San Jose and scored two goals, while also notching one assist. In the offseason, he accompanied the Generation adidas team to London for a three-game tour. He played in three matches on the tour and scored two goals for the squad.

Earthquakes Partner With East Side Union High School District To Support Athletic Programs

The San Jose Earthquakes have created a new program in an effort to help save the interscholastic sports program at the East Side Union High School District (ESUHSD). Currently, there is a proposal to eliminate sports at the East Side Union High School District as part of a plan to cut costs and balance the budget, which would mean that 11 high schools in this district may not be able to continue playing athletics in 2009. The Earthquakes have partnered with the district on a program that will allow companies and organizations to support athletics at the high schools in ESUHSD. Companies can make a donation to the San Jose Earthquakes Community Fund and 50 percent of their donation will go directly to funding for athletics in ESUHSD. The other 50 percent will be used to bring underprivileged children to Earthquakes games as part of the Earthquakes Kicks for Kids program. Sponsors of this package receive a variety of valuable benefits, including recognition in the stadium, the Free Kick magazine and the Earthquakes official website.
