San Jose Earthquakes News Release
The Earthquakes will look to extend their unbeaten streak to four games this Saturday, June 28 with a match against the Kansas City Wizards in a battle for first place. The match kicks off at 7:00 p.m. PT from Spartan Stadium. The first 10,000 fans will receive a 2003 Earthquakes Team Poster, presented by Orchard Supply Hardware. Kansas City trails the Quakes by one point in the Western Conference standings, but have not won at Spartan Stadium since 2000. The Quakes and Wizards tied in their first meeting of the season 1-1.

Last Match Earthquakes 2, Crew 1; Saturday, June 21, 2003; Spartan Stadium; San Jose, Calif.
The San Jose Earthquakes used a late goal from rookie forward Jamil Walker to defeat the Columbus Crew 2-1 Saturday night at Spartan Stadium. Walker, who scored the game-tying goal in the Quakes game Wednesday against the Los Angeles Galaxy, finished a brilliant combination from Ian Russell and Richard Mulrooney with a blast past Tom Presthus to keep San Jose in first place in Major League Soccer with a league best 6-2-3 record. The Quakes were rewarded for their offensive pressure with the first goal of the game on a Mullan strike in the 43rd minute to take a 1-0 lead. Dunivant sent a long ball over the Columbus defense on the left side of the field, allowing Mullan to win a foot race with Brian Dunseth and take the ball into the Crew penalty area. His rolling shot to the far post beat a diving Presthus, who had entered the game for an injured Busch in the 37th minute. The goal was Mullan's fourth of the season and marked the third straight game he has recorded a point. The Crew tied the match 10 minutes into the second half, as Brian West found Paule unmarked inside the 18-yard box. Paule fired a low shot that Onstad blocked, but the rebound fell to McBride who touched the ball into the empty net to make the score 1-1. Two minutes after the goal, tempers flared as Manny Lagos and Columbus defender Mike Clark got into a shoving match, resulting in red cards for both players. The teams each played the rest of the game with only ten men. The Earthquakes secured the win in the 77th minute when Walker, who entered as a second half substitute in the 70th minute, finished off the splendid combination from Mulrooney and Russell. Surrounded by Crew defenders along the right sideline, Mulrooney spun and back-heeled a pass up the wing to a streaking Russell. Russell entered the Columbus penalty box on the left side, and then sent a cross right to the Santa Clara University product Walker, who put the ball away for his second goal in as many games and a 2-1 Earthquakes lead.
Last Match vs. Wizards
Earthquakes 1, Wizards 1; Saturday, April 19, 2003; Spartan Stadium; San Jose, Calif.
The San Jose Earthquakes used a late goal by midfielder Brian Mullan to tie the Kansas City Wizards 1-1 in the Quakes home opener at Spartan Stadium. The Wizards took the first lead of the game in the 74th minute following a Preki corner kick. Earthquakes goalkeeper Pat Onstad jumped out of his goal to punch the ball out of danger, but the ball popped straight in the air. As the ball came down and as Onstad attempted to gain control, he inadvertently knocked the ball into the net to give the Wizards a 1-0 lead. San Jose responded quickly, however, as the Quakes kept pressure on the Kansas City goal. The Earthquakes tied the game in the 81st minute on Mullan's first goal as a member of the Earthquakes. A streaking Mullan took a pass on the right side of the Wizards penalty box from forward Landon Donovan, who was breaking down the middle of the field toward the Kansas City net. Mullan placed a perfect ball past a diving Tony Meola to knot the game at 1-1.

Earthquakes In The Community
-Earthquakes midfielders Ian Russell and Brian Mullan will be visiting the Santa Clara Parks & Recreation Department's kid's camp at Homeridge Park on Tuesday, June 24. The players will answer questions about soccer and give a small soccer demonstration before playing a game with the kids and signing autographs.
-Earthquakes defender Eddie Robinson will be presenting the trophies to the winners of the Campbell Cup Tournament this Sunday, June 29 at the Kings Head Pub in Campbell. The Campbell Cup is presented by the SBASL. Festivities begin at 6:00 p.m.
U.S. National Team
Earthquakes forward Landon Donovan has finished play with the U.S. National Team for the FIFA Confederations Cup. The U.S. finished with a 0-2-1 record in the tournament and did not advance out of the group stage. The team dropped its first two games of the tournament to Turkey (2-1) and Brazil (1-0). Donovan started and played the full 90 minutes against both Turkey and Brazil, recording an assist on the U.S. goal against Turkey. In the last game, Donovan came on as a second half substitute and played 35 minutes in a 0-0 tie with Cameroon. Donovan will rejoin the Earthquakes this week in San Jose.
Streaks
A number of Quakes currently have point or goal scoring streaks following last Saturday's 2-1 victory over the Columbus Crew. -Brian Mullan scored a goal in the 43rd minute to extend his current point streak to three games. -Ian Russell notched an assist for his third consecutive match, setting up Jamil Walker's game-winning goal in the 77th minute. -Jamil Walker scored a goal for his second straight match, the first two goals of his MLS career.
Rookie Impact
Todd Dunivant has made himself one of the leading candidates for Rookie of the Year with his strong play through the first 11 games of the season. He has started all 11 games for the Quakes, becoming the first Quakes rookie ever to start the first 11 games of his career and he has scored a goal and notched three assists. Those five points put him just one point shy of the Quakes rookie record for points in a season (6) set by Wade Barrett in 1998. Dunivant has also done a fine job of shutting down some of the best attackers in MLS. He was named the Earthquakes Los Gatos Brewing Company Player of the Month for April.
Smashing Debut For Starters
The Earthquakes have had three players make their first career MLS starts in 2003. All three players have also scored in those starts, as Todd Dunivant, Chris Ronér and Arturo Alvarez all found the back of the net for the first time in MLS in their first career start.
Rookie Scorers
For the first time in club history, the Earthquakes have had three different rookies score goals in the same season. Todd Dunivant scored in the first match of the season against Colorado on April 12. Arturo Alvarez scored his first career goal on June 14 against Dallas and Jamil Walker scored on June 18 against the Los Angeles Galaxy. The last time the Quakes had three rookies notch points in a season was 1999 when Scott Bower, Jamie Clark and Richard Mulrooney combined to accomplish the feat.
Mulrooney's Week
Richard Mulrooney had a memorable week for the Quakes as he tied or surpassed a few Earthquakes records. Last Wednesday against the Los Angeles Galaxy, Mulrooney surpassed 10,000 minutes played for his career, becoming just the third player ever to play 10,000 minutes in a San Jose jersey, joining Ronald Cerritos (1997-2001) and John Doyle (1996-2000). Last Saturday against the Crew, Mulrooney passed Cerritos in minutes played and now has logged 10,104 minutes, just 1,281 minutes shy of Doyle's all-time record (11,385). Also, Mulrooney played in his 118th career match against the Crew, tying him with Cerritos for second all-time in games played, 14 games short of Doyle's record (132). Mulrooney's first assist of the year on Saturday against Columbus was also a memorable one as it was his 30th career assist, moving him past Eric Wynalda into sole possession of third all-time in assists behind Ronald Cerritos (38) and Eddie Lewis (35).
In June
With their 2-1 win against the Crew, the Quakes record in June is now 20-14-5. June is the Quakes best month in team history, and under Frank Yallop the Quakes have compiled a 9-2-2 record in the month of June.
The Yallop Watch
Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop reached 33 wins for his career in San Jose with the team's win against the Crew. Yallop is now just two wins away from the club record of 35 held by Brian Quinn, who coached parts of three seasons from 1997-99.
Hitting The Century Mark
The Earthquakes 2-1 win against Columbus was the 99th victory in team history. The Quakes can record the 100th win in club history with a win against the Kansas City Wizards this Saturday, June 28.
Seeing Red
Quakes midfielder Manny Lagos will be unavailable to the Quakes this Saturday against Kansas City due to a red card suspension after his ejection against Columbus.

The all-time series between the two teams is tied at 13-13-3, so a win by the Quakes would put them on top in the series... Earthquakes defender Eddie Robinson scored his first career MLS goal against the Wizards on July 27, 2002...Earthquakes midfielder Ramiro Corrales was ejected for the first time in MLS career against the Wizards on June 20, 1999 while with the MetroStars...Quakes midfielder Manny Lagos recorded the first point of his MLS career against Kansas City on June 25, 1996 while playing as a member of the MetroStars.

Kansas City defender Jimmy Conrad played in 84 games in four seasons with San Jose before joining the Wizards in a trade in January, 2003 ... Kansas City midfielder Francisco Gomez is from Watsonville, Calif. ... Earthquakes defender Jeff Agoos and Wizards goalkeeper Tony Meola were teammates at the University of Virginia in the late 80's and are long-time teammates on the U.S. National Team.
Preki's Dangerous
Kansas City midfielder Preki has long been one of the most dangerous attackers in MLS since 1996. Preki has exploded for 31 points against San Jose in 24 career games against the Earthquakes. Statistically, Preki is far and away the most potent opponent in Earthquakes history, scoring 11 goals and registering nine assists. Wizards forward Josh Wolff has also had success against San Jose, scoring three goals and getting two assists in eight matches vs. San Jose.
Top Guns vs. The Wizards
Midfielders Richard Mulrooney and Brian Mullan are the Earthquakes active leading scorers against the Wizards. Dwayne De Rosario has put up seven points in eight career matches against Kansas City, but the Canadian international is sidelined with a torn LCL in his right knee. Mulrooney has one goal and four assists against Kansas City while Mullan has three goals vs. the Wizards.
Quakes vs. Kansas City
The Earthquakes and Wizards split the season series in 2002 at 2-2, with each team winning its games at home. The Earthquakes have not won in Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium since April 10, 1999, while the Wizards last won at Spartan Stadium on August 16, 2000. The team's tied in the first match of 2003 1-1 on April 19.
Making The First One Count
The Earthquakes were 25-2-2 in 2001 and 2002 when finding the back of the net first. The Quakes only gave up leads two times last season, losing 2-1 to Los Angeles on July 4 and falling 2-1 to Kansas City on July 27. The team has continued that trend in 2003, possessing a 5-0-0 mark when they score the first goal this season. In their past 37 games when scoring the first goal, the Earthquakes have posted a 33-2-2 record, dating back to 2000.
League Leaders
Quakes forward Brian Mullan has shot up the scoring charts after exploding for two goals and two assists in the last three matches. Mullan now has four goals and four assists on the season, placing him fifth in MLS in scoring. Mullan is currently tied along with Landon Donovan and six other players for second in MLS in assists with four. Manny Lagos is tied for second in game-winning assists with two and Donovan is tied for second in the league with two game-winning goals. Pat Onstad is third in goals against average (0.87) and is tied for second in the league with Tim Howard in shutouts with three.
Moving On Up Richard Mulrooney is now alone in third place all-time in Earthquakes history with 30 assists. Mulrooney is tied for second place on the Quakes all-time appearances list with 118 and second in minutes played with 10,104. Landon Donovan is tied for second place with six game-winning goals and is alone in fourth place with 16 goals. Donovan is now tied for sixth place with Ian Russell, as they each have 17 career assists. Troy Dayak is alone in sixth place with 103 San Jose appearances. Manny Lagos is tied for seventh place with 37 career San Jose points.
