San Jose Earthquakes News Release
The San Jose Earthquakes host Minnesota United FC at Earthquakes Stadium on Saturday, March 7 at 4:45 p.m., presented by Honda. The match will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Bay Area, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF. Tickets are available here and the first 3,000 fans will receive a schedule magnet.
The Earthquakes opened the 2020 MLS Season with a 2-2 draw against Toronto FC. Quakes center back Oswaldo Alanis, making his MLS debut, tallied an assist and later scored a dazzling direct free kick five minutes into stoppage time to secure the point for San Jose.
After trailing 2-0, San Jose got second-half goals by Andy Rios and Alanis to complete the comeback. Cristian Espinoza, who finished with a team-high 13 assists last season, registered an assist on Rios' goal and drew the foul that earned the game-tying free kick.
EARTHQUAKES NOTES
Immediate Impact
Against Toronto FC, Quakes defender Oswaldo Alanis became just the second player in Earthquakes history, and first since Francisco Uribe in 1998, to tally a goal and an assist in his MLS debut with the club.
A first at Earthquakes Stadium
Alanis' goal in the final seconds against Toronto was the first Quakes goal from a direct free kick at Earthquakes Stadium, which opened in 2015. The last time San Jose scored off a direct free kick was in 2013, when Marvin Chavez did so at Buck Shaw Stadium against the Colorado Rapids.
All-Time Record against Minnesota United FC
The Quakes have a 4-2-0 all-time record against Minnesota United FC, including a 2-1-0 record at Earthquakes Stadium.
Hoesen's Success against Minnesota
Since joining the Quakes in 2017, forward Danny Hoesen has scored more goals against Minnesota (4) than any other team in MLS. Hoesen is tied for third in goals scored against Minnesota, trailing only Atlanta's Josef Martinez and Portland's Diego Valeri, both of whom have five.
Wondo's Impact
In six appearances against Minnesota United FC in his career, Chris Wondolowski has scored two goals and tallied four assists. Wondolowski is one of just three players in MLS history with 4+ assists and 2+ goals against Minnesota.
Game-Winners
In six career MLS appearances each against Minnesota United FC, Chris Wondolowski has three game-winning assists and Danny Hoesen has two game-winning goals, respectively.
Salinas on the Brink
Shea Salinas enters Saturday's matchup against Minnesota United FC with 46 assists in his Quakes career, just one behind San Jose's all-time leader Ronald Cerritos (47).
RENO 1868 FC UPDATE
Reno 1868 FC fell to San Diego Loyal FC 4-2 on Saturday, Feb. 29, in its final preseason tune-up before the USL season opener. Reno forward Corey Hertzog scored a pair of goals, one just prior to halftime and the other five minutes into the second half, as Reno tried to mount a comeback. Hertzog's goals brought Reno within one goal, trailing 3-2, though San Diego would go on to add one more goal before the final whistle.
Reno 1868 FC will kick off the 2020 USL season this week on Friday, March 6 by visiting the Tacoma Defiance at Cheney Stadium. The match will kick off at 7:00 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
