Earthquakes Defender Jay Ayres Undergoes Successful Surgery

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that defender Jay Ayres underwent successful surgery to repair a facial fracture on Thursday, May 8. Ayres is expected to be sidelined for eight weeks. Dr. Peter Lorenz performed the surgery on Ayres.

Ayres and defender Ryan Cochrane were involved in a collision during the Quakes U.S. Open Cup game on April 30 at Real Salt Lake. The pair went for a head ball and collided, leaving both players with concussions. Ayres also suffered a facial fracture.

The Valrico, Fla. resident has appeared in one reserve game and one U.S. Open Cup game this season. He played 90 minutes in the Quakes Reserves 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy Reserves on Apr. 4.

Ayres signed a developmental contract on Apr. 3 prior to the game against the Los Angeles Galaxy. Ayres joined the Earthquakes after playing four seasons for Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn. Ayres started 68 games in his college career, registering seven goals and five assists.

In 2006 and 2007, Ayres was named Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Atlantic Sun and Atlantic Sun All-Academic. As a freshman, Ayres helped Belmont reach the 2004 Atlantic Sun Championship where he scored his first collegiate goal.
