Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SAN ANTONIO - The Missions mustered six runs in the first two innings to beat Corpus Christi, 7-4, before 4,462 fans Saturday night at Wolff Stadium.
The Hooks received excellent work from their bullpen as Freylin Garcia, Tyler Brown and Jonathan Sprinkle teamed for 5 1/3 shutout innings.
Brown, pitching for the first time in the Texas League since late May, struck out five over three frames. Garcia retired four of the six men he faced while Sprinkle struck out a pair in a perfect eighth.
Corpus Christi made it a 4-1 game in the second on extra base hits by Alex McKenna and C.J. Stubbs. McKenna notched his third triple in 25 games with the Hooks. And Stubbs' first Texas League knock of 2022 was a double into the left-field corner.
Trailing 7-1, CC mounted a rally in the sixth as Henry Henry walked the bases loaded to begin the frame. Fred Schlichtholz entered the game and recorded the first two outs quickly. After falling behind in the count, 0-2, Wilyer Abreu, now riding a nine-game hitting streak, worked it full and pushed the seventh pitch into center field for a two-run single.
The Hooks got their final run in the seventh. Justin Dirden extended his hit streak to eight games with a lead-off single. Two outs later, Grae Kessinger sent a knock through the left side, chasing home Dirden from second.
CC put two men on in the ninth against Missions closer Angel Felipe, but a lineout to third base ended the contest.
The rubber match of this three-game series is Sunday with Jose Bravo on the mound for CC. First pitch 6:05.
