Keystone Ice Miners News Release
JANESVILLE, WI - Taylor Fernandez scored twelve seconds into the game, but Janesville scored three unanswered goals to rally and defeat the Ice Miners, 3-1 on Friday night at the Janesville Ice Arena. For Keystone, it was their 10th loss in 13 games
Fernandez, the hero from last night, got the Ice Miners off to a great start, wristing home a pass from Alex Archibald and putting Keystone up 1-0 just 12 seconds into the game. The Ice Miners outshot the Jets 11-7 in the first and ended the frame up 1-0.
In the 2nd, Lordanthony Grissom hooked Kip Hoffman on a breakaway, giving him a penalty shot which was stopped by goaltender Alex Blankenburg. Shortly after, however, Brandon Schultz pounced on a Keystone turnover and scored his 11th goal of the season, and 3rd against the Ice Miners. Evan Feno and Zach Lavalle picked up assists on the goal scored at 4:30. The Ice Miners then got into penalty trouble and fell behind when Adam Winborg scored on a 5 on 3 advantage. Winborg knocked the puck out of midair, keeping his stick below the crossbar and jamming it past Blankenburg to make it 2-1 Jets. Schultz and Lavalle assisted.
With the score 2-1 into the 3rd, Dan Kucerovy stretched the lead to 3-1, with a goal at 6:37 set up by Roberts Smits and Jeff Alderfer. The Ice Miners had two powerplays in the frame but went 0-5 on the game. Janesville became the first North Division team to reach 30 points as their win put them at 31, leading the division by 4 points over idle Soo. Keystone fell to 8-10-2 on the season. Matt Jurusik made 22 saves for the victory.
The Ice Miners and Jets will finish out the weekend with a 8:00 ET/7:00 CT faceoff on Saturday night at the Janesville Ice Arena. The game will be broadcast live on FASTHockey.com.
