Cape Breton Eagles News Release
SYDNEY - The Cape Breton Eagles struck first in this weekend's Battle Of Nova Scotia with a 5-3 victory over the Halifax Mooseheads. The first game of the two game set was a back and forth encounter in which no team led by two until the dying minutes.
There was a fast start to the game with both teams scoring in the opening four minutes- Ãâ°mile Hegarty-Aubin striking first for the Eagles and Jordan Dumais countering for the Mooseheads. The Eagles came out flying, outshooting Halifax 15-8 in the opening frame- but it was Halifax who escaped the opening period with the lead. With 19 seconds left in the period Brendan Tomilson fanned on a shot but caught up with the puck to put it by William Grimard on second attempt.
The middle period was the quietest on the scoresheet but the Eagles did find their tying goal, as Nathan Larose blasted a one timer off a face-off win to knot the score heading into the third frame.
Before the four minute mark of the third period, Zachary L'Heureux restored the Halifax lead with a nifty backhand over Grimard. The lead wouldn't last to the halfway mark of the period as Ryan Francis ripped a shot in the right face-off circle by Cole McLaren.
Less than 80 seconds later, the Eagles would have the lead. Jarrett Baker pushed the puck from the left side of the blueline to the side of the goal, finding Connor Trenholm at the side of the net and he'd tip it over McLaren to give the Eagles the lead.
With two minutes to play, Halifax coach JJ Daigneault lifted McLaren in favour of an extra attacker. The Eagles would win the draw and establish a presence in the Halifax end. McLaren came back to the goal, and then quickly back to the bench when the Mooseheads gained the Eagles end. During his second time on the bench it was red light behind the empty net would go off as Félix Lafrance fired it the length of the ice to secure a 5-3 victory for the Eagles.
Grimard stopped 24 of 27 shots in the win, while McLean turned away 33 of 37 in addition to the empty netter in the loss.
