Eagles' Nest Notes: The Weekly Spirit Preview

The Spirit enter the week at 19-13-0-0, with 38 points. Saginaw is in second place in the OHL West Division and sixth the OHL Western Conference. The Spirit were 1-2 last week, with a 9-6 loss in Mississauga, a 3-2 win in Owen Sound and a 5-0 loss in Guelph.

The league enters the Christmas break this week. The Spirit resume with three games beginning Wednesday, December 28th versus the Erie Otters and concluding the week on the road in Sudbury and Barrie.

Seeing Double: Patrick Asselin's back to back two goal nights Friday against Mississauga and Owen Sound Saturday gives him six multiple-goal games. The team record was set in 2003-04 by Nick Lees with eight multiple-goal games.

Dearly Departed: Spirit forward Tom Pyatt has earned a spot on Team Canada for the World Junior Tournament. He's the first Spirit player to make the Team Canada World Junior squad. Spirit forward Marek Kvapil earned a spot on the Czech Republic squad last year and earned a Bronze medal. Spirit forward Michal Birner is at the Czech camp this week and the Spirit should hear whether he has made the squad soon.

Underage forward Zack Torquato is with team Ontario for the World U-17 Challenge and will return in early January.

Welcome Aboard: The Spirit activated defenseman Christopher Breen for last weekend's games. The 16 year old Uxbridge, Ontario native was +2 in his OHL debut versus Mississauga. He plays with the OHA Mississauga Chargers, where he has one goal and six assists in 31 games.

Individual Marks: Spirit players set an number of individual team records during the first half of 2005-06. Michal Birner has the team's fastest hat trick; Patrick McNeill has the team's fastest two goals; Zack Torquato has the most goals scored by an underage player. McNeill became the team's career assist leader, while Pyatt holds the mark for career points.

Team Marks: Nineteen wins is not only the best the Spirit have had in the first half of a season, it's the most wins the franchise has had since the 2000-01 North Bay Centennials had 32 wins.
