Cape Breton Eagles News Release

SYDNEY - The road team continued to have the edge in the current mini-series between the Eagles & Mooseheads as Halifax emerged victorious 5-2 on Wednesday night in Sydney.

The first period belonged to Halifax rookie Markus Vidicek. He was able to take advantage of a turnover in front of the Eagles goal before the eight minute mark to beat Nicolas Ruccia low along the ice. Then, with Lucas Canning in the box late in the opening period, the Eagles denied the Mooseheads top power play unit but Vidicek sent the puck through a screen to double the lead before the first siren.

The score wasn't the only bad news for the Eagles in the opening 20 minutes. Connor Trenholm was taken down by Jason Horvath and returned for just one shift in the opening period, and not at all in the remaining 40.

It was still 2-0 halfway through regulation but the game would continue to go Halifax's way. On a Mooseheads power play, pinching defenseman Cameron Whynott deflected the puck off Eagles captain Jarrett Baker and made it a 3-0 score. Then in the final three minutes of the frame, Landon Miron converted a pass from behind the net from Vidicek to push the edge to 4-0.

However the Eagles finished the middle stanza strong, getting on the board on a goal from Émile Hegarty-Aubin with 59 seconds to play. Then before the horn the Eagles would draw their first power play of the night that would carry over to the third period.

While the Eagles didn't score on the man advantage, they did cut the deficit before the five minute mark when Mark Rumsey took the puck off goaltender Alexis Gravel and put it by the Mooseheads net minder to score in his Eagle debut. (Rumsey also assisted on the Eagles first goal).

Alas, Halifax would get the goal back as just after the eight minute mark James Swan scored from the slot to make it a 5-2 scoreline. There would be no further scoring and Halifax was able to avenge their defeat from Sunday afternoon.

Gravel picked up the win, stopping 24 of 26 shots. Ruccia was given the loss, stopping 31 of 36.

The Eagles will finish their three game set against the Mooseheads on Friday night, in Halifax. Puck drop is at 7:00 PM and it will be broadcast on Eastlink Television.
