Cape Breton Eagles News Release
CHARLOTTETOWN - It wasn't the start to the weekend the Eagles were looking for as they fell 7-2 to the Charlottetown Islanders Friday night in PEI.
Charlottetown came out with jump, outshooting the Eagles 9-1 in the first eight minutes. Patrick LeBlanc put the home team on the scoresheet, putting a rebound from a Zachary Beauregard shot through Nicolas Ruccia.
The Eagles found an equalizer before period's end though, and it was memorable. Jérémy Langlois jumped in the play, finishing a beautiful passing play from Connor Trenholm and Liam Kidney to knot the game at one. But the game would not be tied at the first buzzer- William Trudeau beat Ruccia with a hard shot low along on the ice on the power play to put the home team back in front.
The second period featured more fireworks, and special teams. Cole Fraser found himself in the penalty box with the instigator after a spirited encounter with Ben Boyd. Lukas Cormier took advantage for the Islanders on the ensuing power play, with a highlight reel goal- cutting down the right wing, out to the front of the net and lifting it over Ruccia.
Charlottetown would add two more before period's end, first with Cédric Desruisseaux putting it through Ruccia's legs and then Trudeau coming in all alone and finishing with a nifty deke to make it 5-1. But the Eagles gave themselves a chance heading into the third period by cashing in on the first Cape Breton power play of the night. Ryan Francis buried as pass from Jarrett Baker five seconds into the man advantage and it was a 5-2 score headed into the final frame.
They could get no closer, though, as the Islanders had the lone tallies of the third period. Cormier notched his second of the game with a precise shot under the crossbar and Thomas Casey finished the scoring when he jabbed the puck into the mesh after a big scramble in front of the net.
Colten Ellis picked up the win in goal, stopping 21 of 23 shots. Ruccia took the loss, allowing seven goals on 40 shots.
The same two teams will go at it in Charlottetown tomorrow night at 7 PM, and will be televised on Eastlink. The game will also be streamed online, available for purchase at qmjhl.neulion.com/qmjhl. You can also hear all the action beginning with the pre-game show with Patrick McNeil at 6:30 PM on 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com
