Charlotte Independence News Release

Charlotte (NC) - The Charlotte Independence nabbed a road point against second-place Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Saturday night at Highmark Stadium. In the 58th minute, Independence midfielder Greg Jordan was shown a second yellow card of the match, but a three-save performance from goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra stymied the Riverhounds offense.

In the first half of play, neither team edged out an advantage. In the 3rd minute, Independence goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra came up huge with a reaction kick for the Wells Fargo Save of the Game. However, the dynamic of the match changed when the Independence leading goal scorer Jorge Herrera was subbed off for an apparent injury and Jordan was sent off reducing the side to 10-men.

The Independence nearly broke through ten minutes later when rookie midfielder Jake Areman separated from the Riverhounds defense and shot just inches wide of the net. In a total-team, defensive effort, the Independence withstood 16 second-half crosses and six total shots to mark the team's fifth shutout of the season.

The Independence will return home next Wednesday, August 22nd when Louisville City FC visits the Sportsplex at Matthews. In support of Carolina Rapids youth player McKenna Woodhead, who was permanently paralyzed in a recent watersport accident, the Charlotte Soccer community will be donating all ticket revenue from the game to McKenna and her family in assistance of the 14-year-old's recovery. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET. For more information and ticket options, please visit charlotteindependence.com or call the front office at 704-206-1515.
