Amarillo Venom News Release

AMARILLO, TEXAS- The Amarillo Dusters were out in the community today with a visit to Whittier Elementary School. Students in the ACE program at Whittier were honored today for their accomplishments in the classroom.

Amarillo Duster, Dwayne Slay, talked with the kids about his career and encouraged them to go after their dreams.

"Don't let anyone tell you that you can't accomplish your dreams," Slay said. "You just tell them, 'Yes, I can.'"

Brandy Brannon, counselor at Whittier Elementary School, said she chose the Dusters because they are always willing to come out and support the school. She also expressed that she was very impressed with Slay.

"We feel like students need positive and successful role models to meet and listen to how they got to where they are today," Brannon said. "It was obvious that Dwayne was excited to be there, and the kids really tuned in and listened."

The ACE program is designed to encourage students to maintain good grades, have consistent attendance, and be good citizens in and out of the classroom. If they maintain their ACE program membership throughout high school, they are eligible to receive assistance with college tuition.

"We try to focus on the college aspect of the program, telling them that it is something they can do with hard work," Brannon said. "We encourage school success at an early age so they have the idea that they need to always be working hard."

"One of our main objectives for the 2008 season is to have our players demonstrate the importance of community involvement," said Joe Morgado, vice president of the Amarillo Dusters. "Having Dwayne at Whittier today was a great example of how the 2008 Dusters will continue to reach out to children in the community all season long."

The 2008 season is right around the corner. Catch the Dusters in action at the home opener against the Central Valley Coyotes on April 5. Season tickets are going fast! Call (806) 350-7277 or visit www.dustersfootball.com for more information.
