Amarillo Venom News Release
AMARILLO, TEXAS The Amarillo Dusters are back in action at the Amarillo Civic Center this Saturday, taking on the Tulsa Talons. Along with the exciting arena football action, the halftime show will feature the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals, a race for miniature dachshunds.
"This is such a fun event for both the participants and the audience," said Dusters vice president Joe Morgado. "It just provides yet another way that people can enjoy the experience of a Dusters game."
The rules of the race are pretty simple. Only genuine dachshunds are allowed to race. Before the Dusters game, preliminary races will be taking place in the Civic Center parking lot. Eight finalists will be competing in the final race during halftime of the game.
The winner of the final race will receive a check for $250, a trip for two to San Diego in December to be a part of the Holiday Bowl Parade, Bank of America VIP tailgate party, tickets to the Holiday Bowl game, and also compete in the Grand Finale race for $1,000.
"The purpose of this entire event is just to have fun," Morgado said. "The prizes are pretty good though!"
There is no cost to register for this event. Dog owners are responsible for any clean up and are asked to bring their own supplies. Two people must be available for the race, one at the start line and one at the finish line. Owners may use treats and toys, but they must stay at the finish line. Any dog that is touched by its handler before reaching the finish line will be disqualified.
Registration for the event will be from 2:30 - 3:30 on Saturday. Preliminary races will begin at 3:30 p.m. For more information, call the Dusters office at 806.350.7277.
