Amarillo Venom News Release
At a press conference held at the Ambassador Hotel today, the Amarillo Dusters announced the assignment from the af2 league office of five former Lone Star Conference players. Former Eastern New Mexico Standout Jeff Howard, and former West Texas A&M Buffaloes Marques Kelley, Aubrey Lacy, Deyon Scott, and Dewayne Mathis all joined the Dusters for the 2006 season.
"Jeff Howard is a stud, and Marques Kelley, Aubrey Lacy, Deyon Scott, and Dewayne Mathis are all expected to make significant contributions in 2006," said Dusters General Manager Warren McCarty. "Kelley, Lacy, and Scott all came to our open tryout camp in October and they really impressed us. Mathis worked out as well, and it was his third attempt at making our team. Each time, he showed improvement, and we saw no reason why we shouldn't give him a shot this season. He's got size, speed, and determination."
Jeff Howard, a 6'0, 245 lb FB/LB, was a 4-year letterman and 3-year starter for the Greyhounds, earning All-LSC honors in 2002, 2003, and 2004. He was an All-American in 2004 as well. He finished his remarkable career at ENMU with 248 tackles, 29 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, 4 interceptions, 3 batted balls, 4 fumbles recovered, and 4 forced fumbles as well. In addition to his on-field prowess for the Greyhounds, Howard was an Academic All-Conference performer as well.
Aubrey Lacy, a 5'9, 180 lb. WR/DB, was a 3-year starter at runningback for WTAMU from 2002-2004. He gained 1,390 yards on the ground, averaging 5.5 yards per carry and scored 14 touchdowns. He also had 45 catches for 304 yards and 1 touchdown as well.
Deyon Scott, a 6'2, 260 lb. OL/DL, was a 2-year starter at defensive end for WTAMU in 2003 and 2004. In his two seasons, he had 32 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and 2 batted balls.
Marques Kelley, a 6'2, 200 lb Defensive Specialist played in the secondary in the 2004 season for WTAMU, and racked up 65 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 2 pass break-ups, and 1 interception, and 1 fumble recovery.
Dewayne Mathis, a 6'2, 195 lb WR/DB played in 1997 for the Buffaloes before transferring to Fairmont State to focus on academics. Mathis resides in Amarillo, and works in retail management.
"Obviously Jeff Howard brings an intense, tenacious approach to the game," said Dusters Head Coach Steve Perdue. "He'll be in impact player on defense, and on offense we think he'll be a punishing blocker and very effective with the ball in his hands. Aubrey Lacy has 4.4 speed, so we know he can stretch the field if he can prove to be a reliable receiver. Deyon Scott is a hard worker, and will put his hand down and come off the edge defensively. His motor doesn't stop. Marques Kelley may be a standout player in the deuce, because he has a unique combination of size and speed. Dewayne Mathis is in the same boat. They are both tall, they can run, and they will hit."
