
Dunegrass to Host Third Annual Crackers Golf Classic

PORTLAND, ME- Today the Portland Pirates announced the date for the 3rd Annual Crackers Golf Classic, to benefit the 2006 United Way of Greater Portland Campaign. The golf tournament, an Event of the Portland Pirates Foundation, will take place Monday, October 2, 2006 at Dunegrass Golf Club in Old Orchard Beach, ME. The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m.
"We are thrilled to continue the tradition of the Crackers Classic. Dunegrass is an exceptional course that our players and fans will really enjoy. After our success from this past season we can't wait to reunite everyone with this event and raise funds for the 2006 United Way of Greater Portland Campaign," said Brian Petrovek, Foundation President and Managing Owner/CEO of the Portland Pirates.
This year participants will have the opportunity to play golf with current and former Pirates players and coaches, former Maine Mariners and other special guests. The celebrities at the event will join with registered golfers as a fourth player as part of the scramble format and a great day of fun.
Participants in the Crackers Classic will receive access to the practice range, greens fees, golf cart, lunch, golf giveaways and a post-golf beef and chicken barbeque. Each golfer will also receive four Pirates Flex tickets which can be used at any game(s) during the Pirates 2006-2007 regular season. There will also be contests for closest to the pin, longest drive, straightest drive and putting. Event prizes will include $10,000 cash from Pape Chevrolet for a hole-in-one on the 170 yard, par 3, 17th hole, a ski package from Sunday River and many other fantastic prizes awarded for low gross, low net and highest gross.
Sponsorship and Participation opportunities start at $175 per golfer or $450 for a threesome. The field is limited to 144 entries (36 foursomes). The Crackers Classic also offers option for non-golfers that includes the evening beef and chicken barbecue for only $35. Dunegrass Golf Club opened in 1998 and was designed by Dan Maples, an internationally known golf course architect. Dunegrass is the Greater Portland area's premier public golf club. Dunegrass has over 300 acres of coastal terrain to make up an 18-hole course featuring rolling fairways and undulating greens.
Over the past two years, the Crackers Golf Classic has raised over $4,000 for the Casco Bay Youth Hockey Association and $2,500 for the Maine Sled Hockey Program. The Classic has featured former Pirates players, former Mariners players and various other celebrities who have played with over 200 golfers as part of this annual fundraiser.
The Crackers Golf Classic is named for the Pirates long-time mascot, Crackers the parrot. The Crackers Golf Classic is an event of the Portland Pirates Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) Maine Public Charity. The mission of the Portland Pirates Foundation is to enrich and impact the region, through educational, sports-based, community-building and fundraising programs. The Foundation leverages the unique talents of Portland Pirates players and staff and collaborates with local corporate and community partners to make a difference in our local communities.
Season ticket plans for the 2006-07 season are now on sale at the Pirates office, located at 94 Free Street in Portland. Ticket plans start at just $60. Individual tickets go on sale Monday, September 25, 2006.
