
Dukes Defeat JackHammers

JOLIET, IL â The Duluth-Superior Dukes (4-2, 28-23) defeated the Joliet JackHammers (3-4, 25-27) 5-to-1 on Thursday night at Silver Cross Field. The JackHammers brief two-game winning streak ended. They are also 2-and-1 versus the Dukes through three games of this four-game series and 3-and-3 versus them in the season series.
With two outs in the top of the 3rd inning, the Dukes scored three runs with five consecutive singles. Derrick Gibson (3-for-5) and Sean Patrick Murphy (1-for-4) tallied RBI as another run was scored on a wild pitch.
Tony Chance (1-for-4) led off the bottom of the 4th inning with a home run over the right field wall. It was his 1st round tripper of the season and 7th RBI. The JackHammers trailed 3-to-1.
Murphy added another RBI on a ground out in the top of the 5th inning. It scored Greg Morrison (2-for-5) who reached on a one-out single. Jackhammers starting RHP Randy Goodrich (1-2) worked seven innings, allowed none hits, four runs (all earned), no walks allowed, and he struck out six in taking the loss.
Dukes starting RHP Julio Villalon (7-2) pitched a complete game. In his nine innings, he gave up five hits, one run (earned), two walks and struck out six for the win.
LOOSE GRAVEL: Prior to the game on the field, C Ryan Sienko was honored for being the first JackHammers player to leave because his contract was purchased by a Major League organization. That organization was the Chicago White Sox. Before walking off the field from the ceremony, Sienko's teammates drilled him with softie baseballs commemorating Sienko's Northern League Central record of being hit by a pitch 25 times.
LOOSE GRAVEL II: Near the end of the game, the Northern League Central announced their all-star team. C Ryan Sienko and starting LHP Brian Mazone were the JackHammers that were named to the team. The game will be played on August 6 at 6:30 PM (Central time) in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada as the Northern League Central faces the East.
The JackHammers and Dukes complete this four-game series at Silver Cross Field on Friday night at 7:05 PM. The gates open at 6 PM. LHP Brian Mazone (6-3, 3.21) will start for the JackHammers, and RHP Travis Thompson (3-2, 3.19) will start for the Dukes. The first 1,000 fans age 21 and older will receive a cap courtesy of Budweiser. Roe Conn and Gary Meier of the "Roe & Garry" radio show on WLS radio will throw out the ceremonial first pitches and attend the game.
