Dubuque Comeback Falls Short Against Bucs

Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

DUBUQUE, IA - The Dubuque Fighting Saints (32-12-3-3, 70 pts) failed to complete a comeback in a 2-1 loss to the Des Moines Buccaneers (21-24-5-1, 48 pts) at home on Saturday night.

The Buccaneers scored twice in the first 11:19 of the opening frame on Saturday night to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. The Saints' two-goal deficit remained throughout the entire second period and into the third.

Through the first 4:55 of the third period, the Fighting Saints were short-handed for four minutes and their dominant penalty kill kept the Saints in the game. The kill was perfect in three tries on Saturday and has killed 14-straight penalties in the last four games.

Dylan Johnson was a big reason for the kill's success on Saturday, stopping 26 of 28 Des Moines shots in the defeat. He stopped all 15 shots he faced after the first period.

Just past the halfway mark in the third period, Juraj Pekarcik drew a double-minor high-sticking penalty against Des Moines' Jack Kernan to give the Saints their second and third power-play chances of the night.

Erik Påhlsson scored just 17 seconds into the first half of that power play. His 21st of the season was assisted by Beckett Hendrickson, who has four points in his first four games with the Saints. Despite more chances throughout the rest of the power play, the Saints couldn't find the tying goal.

With an empty net, the Saints generated some late chances, but were unable to find the tying goal late in the game. Dubuque launched 35 shots on Ethan Dahlmeir, who stopped 34 of them in the Bucs' win.

The Fighting Saints head to Muskegon next weekend for a pair of road games with the Lumberjacks.
