Charleston, SC - The Greenville Drive scored five runs in the top of the third inning on Friday and never looked back in an 8-5 defeat of the Charleston RiverDogs in the resumption of the Battle of the Palmetto State presented by Spinx.
The big inning for the Drive (24-43) began with a double by Lorenzo Cedrola and a single by Ryan Fitzgerald, followed by a Rony Garcia (2-4) balk to bring in a run. Marino Campana then lined an RBI double to center, and he came in on Michael Osinski's single. A RiverDogs (32-34) passed ball and a single by Everlouis Lozada brought in the final two runs.
Behind that early support, Drive starter Kutter Crawford (1-3) picked up the win after working five innings and allowing three runs on five hits.
Dermis Garcia's RBI single in the bottom of the first staked Charleston to a 1-0 lead, and they trimmed the Drive lead to 5-3 in the fourth after a two-run double from Matt McPhearson.
Osinski drove home his second run of the night with an RBI double in the sixth to score Victor Acosta, who reached on a single. The RiverDogs got back to within one in the bottom half after RBIs from McPhearson and Carlos Vidal.
The Drive were able to pull away with a couple of runs in the final two innings. Fitzgerald drew a leadoff walk in the eighth and came home on a single by Acosta, and in the ninth, Jordan Wren came in on a wild pitch after beginning the frame with a triple.
Lukas Young threw two scoreless innings for Greenville to record his fifth save of the season. Osinski and Fitzgerald each collected three hits to power the offense, while Acosta chipped in with two hits.
Game two of the three-game series begins at 6:05 PM on Saturday in Charleston. Left-hander Jhonathan Diaz (2-5, 3.79) takes the mound for the Drive against RiverDogs left-hander Dalton Lehnen (5-3, 2.58).
