Greenville Drive News Release
Asheville is rarely a place to find a pitcher's duel, but it was home to one on Monday night, as the Greenville Drive (12-25) were held to just two hits in a 1-0 loss to the Asheville Tourists (20-16).
The Tourists scored the only run of the night in the bottom of the second inning against Drive starter Cody Kukuk (2-4), as Julian Yan reached on an error with one out, stole second and came in to score when Matt Argyropoulos singled to right field.
Kukuk took a hard-luck loss, as the lone run on the evening was unearned. He worked four innings and allowed four hits and three walks while striking out three. Jason Garcia followed with an excellent stint of his own, as he fired four scoreless innings of work, giving up one hit and one walk with three punchouts.
As effective as Kukuk and Garcia were, Tourists starter Eddie Butler (4-1) was dominant on this night. He threw seven and a third innings and gave up just one hit, a Mookie Betts single, while issuing no walks and striking out seven Drive batters. Rayan Gonzalez and Raul Fernandez were able to preserve the shutout, with Fernandez picking up his eighth save of the season.
Betts' third-inning single extended his current hitting streak to nine games. Cody Koback's double in the ninth inning was the only other hit for Greenville. Argyropoulos and Francisco Sosa each collected a pair of hits for Asheville.
These two teams will meet again on Tuesday night in game two of the three-game set. First pitch in Asheville is scheduled for 7:05. RHP Justin Haley (0-5, 6.66) will take the mound for the Drive, while the Tourists counter with RHP T.J. Oakes (3-3, 6.47).
