Drillers\' Coach Resigns

December 29, 2002 - American Professional Football League (APFL)
Beaumont Drillers News Release

(Beaumont, TX) (December 28, 2002) Stephen Diaz has resigned as head coach of the NIFL Beaumont Drillers for personal reasons. The resignation came just days before Christmas.

"I don't look at this as a set back. It's early in the season and we have already begun the interviewing process to find a replacement. I wish Stephen this best of luck with his future plans," stated Steve Reap, general manager.

Coach Beau Shahan will remain on staff as the defensive coordinator and the resignation of Diaz will not affect the player roster.

"We've been able to sign some highly skilled, extremely talented players in recent weeks which hopefully will bring home the championship trophy to Beaumont. Because of this and the overwhelming response to our first try-out, we will not have an additional open tryout. Right now, we're evaluating interested players one-on-one. If there are players who missed the first try-out and are interested in playing, they should contact the front office," Reap stated.

While league rules prohibit organized practice until 14 days prior to the first game, Reap says there's nothing against players getting together on their own and recommends those participants who were held over from the first tryout get in the weight room and get in shape for March.

"We're working to get ready for March 1 when players report to camp and by March 4 we will have our roster set and begin preparing for our March 15 opener against Tupelo," Reap continued.

For more information regarding player evaluations or to purchase tickets, contact the Drillers office at 409-840-9229.
