Tulsa Drillers News Release

For the second straight game Saturday, the Tulsa Drillers got a solid outing from their starting pitcher. Six shutout innings from Samuel Deduno led the Drillers to a 3-0 blanking of the Springfield Cardinals at Drillers Stadium. Deduno and three Tulsa relievers limited Springfield to only three hits.

The win was the third straight for the Drillers and moved them only one game behind the Cardinals in the North Division standings of the Texas League.

The Drillers took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. After Chris Nelson singled on a grounder past second, he moved to third on Jeff Kindel's line drive single to right. Nelson then scored on Darin Holcomb's sacrifice fly to left field.

Springfield's first hit of the game came from Pete Kozma, who graduated from Owasso in 2007. With two outs in the top of the third, Kozma singled on a line drive down the first base line. He moved to third when Brett Wallace doubled to right. Deduno got out of the jam when he struck out Steven Hill to end the inning.

Tulsa added to its lead when Daniel Carte led off the fifth with a single to left. Deduno followed with a double high off the wall in left center that allowed Carte to score to give the Drillers a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Jeff Kindel tripled for the second time this season. He scored when Holcomb lifted another sacrifice fly to left.

Deduno (2-1, ERA 4.07) had a strong night pitching and hitting as he picked up his second win of the year. In six shutout innings, he allowed only two hits while striking out seven.

Deduno's hit in the fifth inning marked the third RBI by a Drillers pitcher this season. Tulsa hurlers are now hitting .276 for the year in 29 at-bats.

The Drillers bullpen was also effective. Tommy Baumgardener allowed only one walk in 1 1/3 innings, while Jonathan George retired the only two hitters he faced in the eighth.

Closer Andrew Johnston needed only four pitches to retire the Cardinals in order in the ninth to collect his fifth save of the year.
