Drillers defeat Katy to claim first place in division

BEAUMONT, TX -- Shock Davis showed why on Saturday night that he is one of the best athletes in the NIFL - 168 all purpose yards and three touchdowns.

Davis and the Beaumont Drillers defeated the Katy Copperheads, 53-42, inside Ford Arena to take over sole possession in the NIFL Pacific South Division. The Drillers improved to 2-1 overall, 2-1 in division play while Katy fell to 2-2 overall and 1-1.

Davis scored the game's first touchdown as well as the last two. His first came on a 26-yard pass from Damone Scott on Beaumont's first possession then scored on a 26-yard to put the Drillers up for good, 46-42, with 1:50 remaining in the game.

Katy had one last opportunity but Davis picked off Ryan Breedlove's pass and returned it untouched for a touchdown with just 26 seconds left to seal the win.

Beaumont running back Roland Hayes was held to just 37 yards but scored four times to give him a NIFL league leading 10 touchdowns.

The Drillers gained 255 yards of total offense. Scott threw for 188 yards on 16-of-24 attempts with two touchdowns and 1 interception. Pat Palmer added three catches for 68 yards and one score.

On the defensive side, linebacker Shane Winchester had 7.5 tackles with two sacks.

Without Bam Morris, the Copperheads only offense came from quarterback Ryan Breedlove. Breedlove threw for 199 yards on 14-of-32 attempts with three scores and one interception. He also led the team with 33 rushing yards.

The Drillers will next host the Twin City Gators (0-2) on April 8 at 7:05 p.m. At Ford Arena.
